Cons: high-pitch noise
The Bottom Line:
Good price, and reliable, but my drive produces high-pitch noise...
I bought the drive three weeks ago for my back up. Soon after I start using it, I noticed a high pitch noise coming from my computer. I checked CPU and case fan just in case, but it was coming from the drive.
It was not accessing noise, and pretty consistent, so, I think it is noise from rotation of the disk. The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) Motors supposed to reduce noises, but for some reason, it was not as quiet as I had experienced with my other Maxtor drives.
I accessed Maxtor website where they offer replacement service for a noisy drive. You have to pay for the return shipping (they pay for shipping for the replacement), but the service was nice and easy. You can set up everything in their website, and if you want to talk to someone, you can send an email to them and they reply within 2-3 days.
Service was great, but one bad thing was that it did not solve the noise issue. The new drive is as noisy as the old one.
Thus, if you are picky about noise coming from the computer, I cannot recommend the drive. I also have three more Maxtor drives (DiamondMax Plus 9): two of them are very quiet and other one is as noisy as this one... So, so far I got 50-50 odds.
Other than the noise, I think Maxtor products are very reliable and their customer service is very good. My computer have a Maxtor drive for about three years, and I never had any data loss nor harddrive crush. If you don't put your desktop computer right next to me as I do, it will be a good harddrive.
