Author's Review
I've personally played this game for hours and hours. I beat it twice, and have unlocked all of the minigames. In this review I will try to run through the main game, as well as some of the minigames. The review would be terribly long if I went through them all, there are tons.

Main Game

The premise of this game is a traditional board type game where you roll a die and move a certain number of spaces. The goal of the game is to make it to the "Star Space" on the board, and buy stars with your coins. You can pick up or buy "candy" along the way. Eating candy will give you different power ups and abilities. I will go over some of those later. First let's review some of the boards you can play on.

Boo's Haunted House

The game starts with each player hitting their dice block, and whoever rolls the highest number, goes first.

In this board, you have to make your way through uncharted paths of a haunted house...in order to find the room with King Boo...who will sell you a star. This can be frustrating, because it is sometimes hard to make it there being that you do not know where you are going...and sometimes you travel several spaces and come up empty...but your opponent gets lucky and goes the right way and finds the star room quickly. Some rooms are also pitfalls, which instead of giving you a chance to buy a star, send you back to the start!

Train Board

This board takes place on a choo-choo-train. The goal is again to get enough coins so that you can buy a star off of the movie star girl. Moving lots of spaces is best on this board, because you can see where you are going, and every time you make it ot the front of the train, you get 20 coins. There are question mark spots that can awake the wizard, who will move around the cars of the train...sometimes to your advantage, sometimes not!

Hotel Board

This board plays out kinda like monopoly. You move around the streets of the board, and come across different hotels. When you get to a hotel, you can "buy" it for coins. Whoever has the most coins invested in a hotel, is the owner, and then gets 1 star. Once the total amount of coins invested in a hotel reaches 30, the hotel becomes a 2 star hotel. For example, if Mario invests 15 coins in a hotel, he gets 1 star. If then Luigi comes along and invests 16 coins in that same hotel, the total becomes 31, and not only does Luigi take over ownership of the hotel, he gets an additional star for owning a 30 coin hotel! Double the stars for your money! This is a fun board to play with several people, and is best played with a lot of turns and a lot of time on your hands...as these games can go on for 2 or more hours.

There are other boards to explore, but those are a few of my favorites.

CANDY

Candy gives you a burst of energy, in different ways, when you decide is the right time. It is usually best to use candy when other players are a few spaces in front of you. For instance, using a "Bowlo" cando, turns you into a bowling ball and lets you "roll over" your opponents, stealing coins from them in the process! Eating "Weegle" candy makes you small and lets you steal candy from your opponents as you pass by them. Other pieces of candy let you warp to where other players are on the board. Vampire candy lets you directly steal coins from another player by throwing a dart at a dart board, taking coins from the player you hit with the dart. Slowgo candy slows down the dice, for when you want to roll a specific number to land on a special space on the board (comes in handy big time sometimes). So, you can see that candy can really help you out while you're playing this game.

Mini Games!

Man, there are TONS of minigames for you to unlock and play within this game. It's the best part of the whole game, really.

Minigames are launched when you land on certain spaces on the board...or at the end of each "turn" (after each player has had a chance to roll the dice). Depending on how many players are playing, some minigames are 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 1 vs 3, or everyone for themselves. Up to 4 people can play, by the way. Here are some breif descriptions of some of the minigames, as most of them are simple and last only a minute or 2:

- Shaking your Wii controller to simulate shaking up a can of pop, and whoever's can sprays the most when you open it, wins.

- Shooting alien ships by rotating your gun back and forth with your Wii controller.

- Matching your clock with the displayed clock before your opponents can, by turning your Wii controller left and right to move the hands of the clock.

- Using your Wii controller as a lasso, and tossing it onto barrels that are worth different point values.

- Cutting ropes with a big pair of scissors, hoping you don't pick the wrong one and launch yourself off of a mountain!

- A 3 vs 1 game, 3 people drop bomb-ombs on the running player. If the runner survives, he wins...if he gets bombed, the other 3 win!

- Using your Wii controller as a shaker full of sand, and dumping the correct weight out onto a scale. Once oyu hit your correct target range, hit A, and you win. Go over, and you LOSE!

- A game of 2 vs 2 football, where you try to catch the bouncing footballs and throw them into your opponents goal. You can punch and kick your opponents to make them drop the balls, and steal them!

- Target practice, hitting targets with balls, but not hitting the Goomba targets!

- A police shooter type target game where you hit different spots of targets to score higher. It is a timed game, so you have to react fast to each target or you'll miss out completely on points!

This is only a fraction of the minigames that can be played in Mario Party 8. Some are really fun, others are kinda boring/repetative.

Carnival Cards

Carnival Cards are earned by completing games of Mario Party 8. You earn different amounts of cards by playing different kinds of games (1 player, 2 player, 4 player). You use the cards to buy things from the Carnival Bazzar. You can use them to unlock minigames, buy carnival parade pieces, unlock difficult levels of the game to make the whole game harder, unlock "razzing"...where you can shake your controller while your opponents are playing to shout weird sounds at them, etc.

The carnival parade pieces are like figurines of different characters and enemys you come across in the game. If you buy a few pieces, you cna then watch your own parade...where the pieces scroll across the screen. You can click on the pieces to have them do something funny or neat-o...like shoot fireworks into the air, or drop bombs, have a monkey climb a palm tree...etc.

This game will keep you and your friends busy for hours and hours of enjoyment. I'm glad I bought it, all my pals try to borrow it from me all the time. It's a great game.
