The Bottom Line:
The WAP-11 is a great way to extend your network beyond the limits of wires, but activate the WEP security feature so no one else has access to your network.
The WAP-11 is a great way for someone to build a network involving laptops and other portable 802.11 devices, but there is more to the story.
One could use the WAP-11 not only as an access point, but as a point-to-point bridge, or as a point-to-multi-point bridge. In fact, I have five buildings running remotely off of one main access point (set as point to multi-point). Each of the remote buildings are connecting to the primary building as a point-to-point access point. The only challenge in connecting five buildings to one building was line of sight. I had to engineer my own antennas to avoid paying a premium for pre-assembled antennas online.
In the wireless bridge mode, no other wireless device can detect or use the access point. Even without enabling the WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption, your brige is secure. The only way someone can access the connection is to go into the building and connect directly (wired) to it.
Overall I am very impressed with the WAP-11. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to stretch their network beyond the limits of conventional cables. However, I will strongly caution anyone who wishes to ensure their privacy over their wireless network to activate the WEP encryption if they are using the WAP-11 simply as a wireless access point. If you just plug in the access point and start to use it, anyone with a wireless card has the ability to access your network.
