Front side airbags, ABS, and traction control are standard. An antiskid system is optional. Optional head-protecting curtain side airbags were added midyear. Also optional for the first time are heated rear seats, navigation system, and xenon headlights. Power-adjustable pedals and one-touch power front windows are newly standard. Heated and cooled front seats are standard on all but the base V6 model. Lincoln says noise levels are reduced with more-effective sound insulation. Styling changes include revisions to nose, tail, and wheels. The cabin gets some bright trim. Minimize

My 2nd Lincoln

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Styling, engine, handling

Cons: Tires, brakes are very dirty, and the trunk lid hinges take away from trunk space.

The Bottom Line:
I would heartily recommend to anyone looking for value, performance, and wants to buy American. You just can't do any better.

This is my second LS. I had a 2000 and was very pleased with it. I had said for 3 years the only thing I would trade for would be a newer one. I was lucky 2 months ago to find a used 2003 LS with the Sport package.

I loved the first one and the second one shows Lincoln has improved the car even if only in increments. I think the styling is a high point even though some in the auto world seem to think it bland. It's exactly what I want in a higher end car. I cannot wrap my arms around a CTS, just can't do it.

The handling is very good, steering is light when it needs to be as in parking, and provides feel when needed, such as on an onramp. I have found that at the limit the car is very neutral and when the limit is reached the whole car simply moves to the outside of the turn, with very little body roll.

The engine is very smooth, at idle you have to look at the tach to verify that it is indeed running. It is much stronger than the 2000. Maybe my 2000 was weak or this 2003 is very strong, but I find it hard to believe the difference is just 30 hp. I never cease to be amazed at the lunge I experience when it shifts to 3rd during a full bore acceleration run to join with traffic. I do like the gas by wire on the 2003, it has made it easy to move out from a traffic light without the lunge. I find the 2003 gets better mileage in mixed driving than the 2000 did, about 18.5 mpg. I get roughly 24 on the interstate.

The transmission has been dinked by the magazines, but I can find no fault with it. The 2003 will start in 1st, in manumatic mode, without having to manipulate the gas pedal as the 2000 required.

The interior has been improved with items such as real drink holders, the cd changer has been moved from the glove box, a huge improvement in and of itself. I have the heated and cooled seats and find the auto feature is valuable. I'm pleased with the the comfort level and support offered by the seats, and have no complaints. On the contrary I find 500 mile days pretty easy to put in. I'm neutral on the interior colors and materials. They are an upgrade over what came in the 2000, but I can't get excited about aluminum colored plastic.

Overall, I'm very pleased to find the 2003 is even better than the 2000 I had previously and can't believe Lincoln is not promoting this car better. It's proof they have money to burn when the would develope and produce the Zephyr rather than spend the money to further develope an existing winner like the LS.
