Navigator was available either with rear-wheel drive or Fords Control Trac 4-wheel-drive system, which could be left engaged on dry pavement. Automatic self-leveling air-ride shock absorbers went at front and rear on 4x4s, but rear-only on 2WD Navigators. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes were standard either way. A 3-place, third-row bench seat was installed. A 3-place split middle bench was available at no cost, to expand seating capacity from seven to eight. Towing capacity was 8000 pounds--thats right, a hefty four tons. Sole engine was the larger of Expeditions two V8s: a 5.4-liter, rated at 230 horsepower. Navigators got a special post-assembly inspection, plus a 25-mile preshipment road test. Rivals included the GMC Yukon/Denali, Land Rover Range Rover, and Toyota Land Cruiser.

As in an earlier review, I leased a 99 Mercury Mountaineer. I was having trouble with engine knock (spark knock)and no one could fix it. While looking into getting rid of this car (we liked everything else), the dealership had these Navigators. Hmmmm...nice look (macho, yet refined) looks great, more room (3rd seat was especially nice.) Drove it!!! wow!, this really "felt" like a Lincoln. I was always attached to the Town Car, but at my age (38) I was too young to have one, and I like the old, big ones, anyway. This car feels amazing!! Great acceleration, great handling (not what you would expect, very LITTLE body roll) solid feel. And something I had not expected,,,,, it felt smaller driving it than it was! On the outside it looks as big as a school bus, but driving it, it didn't feel so big. But it IS big. Big on space (great leg room, even in the 3rd seat), Big on comfort (quiet, strong, smooth, but enough stiffness to tow our small horse trailer) Big on price.......yeah, that's the only thing,,,but, HEY,,,,! whatcha gonna do?...good stuff can be pricey. But it is worth it. And besides all the other stuff I mentioned, IT'S A LINCOLN! It turns heads, and I get all the utility I need. The power seat is very supportive, and having all those Lincoln touches, like power everything is appreciated. If you are going to spend good money, consider this car. I drove the GMC Yukon and the Suburban, nice cars, all, but could not compare!
