The Lexus RX 400h is the first luxury sport utility vehicle equipped with a hybrid powertrain. It features a version of parent company Toyotas Hybrid Synergy Drive technology thats been modified for SUV duty. Changes include the installation of a new battery, the 3.3-liter V-6 from the RX 330 and a more powerful electric motor that can operate at 12,000 rpm thats twice the top speed of the motor used in the Toyota Prius hybrid. This is a great SUV that certainly won't disappoint. It is a good size, but isn't so large that you can't see anything and can't park it. It is easy to get stuff in and out of the car and the trunk door has a button you can push to make it shut itself. The trunk is a little high off the ground but even my mom who is 5'5 can still reach. One problem with the trunk is the back door is so sloped that if you put large items (like furniture) in it the door might not shut. The backup camera is also very nice (especially when I want to make sure I am not about to run over my mom's dog in her fancy SUV.)
The Navigation system is amazing (Lexus has the best Nav. system by far), and the car has an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride. The Mark Levinson stereo system sounds amazing as well. Considering its size this car gets great mileage, but the mileage tends to drop during cold weather (I think this has something to do with batteries in cold weather.)It is so nice to sit in a car in traffic and know that you are not wasting your expensive fuel, and the Video screen has a nifty diagram that shows when your car is charging and when it is using fuel.
The service department at Lexus is great and they take very good care of their customers. If you make an appointment in advance they will pick up the car (leaving you a different Lexus to drive), service it, and bring it back when they are done. This SUV is very easy to drive and it handles well. Unlike the largest Lexus SUV and the Volvo SUV it remains stable around sharp turns. I have driven this car a lot and never once have I gotten that imbalanced, leaning towards rolling feeling that I have gotten while driving other SUV's. Even though it is a hybrid, the car accelerates very quickly and because the ride is so smooth it is easy to speed without noticing. If you get this car I would advise monitoring your speed closely for the first two months (70mph feels like 40.)
The car also has a beautiful interior and all the features are easily accessed by the driver and the dash is well lit. I have spent many hours in this vehicle and I think that it has very comfortable seats. The seats have lots of adjustments which makes it easy for everyone to get comfortable. My mom has hip problems and even after a long drive in her LS she is sore, but she says that RX is the most comfortable car she has driven and her hips don't hurt when she drives it. Now that she has this SUV the LS sits in the garage all the time. Our whole family loves this car, even the dog who leaps in it every chance she gets hoping for a ride around town.
