This edition is based on the widely known Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament of Bruce M. Metzger. It was especially designed for translators who have not received formal training in textual criticism. It enables them--and other people interested in the initial text of the Greek New Testament--to discover more easily the reasons that certain variant readings in the NT are more likely to be original than others. Therefore the notes of Metzger have been simplified and expanded. Included are discussions of significant differences in divisions and punctuation where those involve differences in meaning. Technical matters are explained in non-technical language. An easy-to-read introduction provides a brief overview of textual criticism, including explanations of key terms, a history of the text, and methods that are used by scholars to arrive at their conclusions.

New Testament Greek: A Whole Language Approach is not primarily a descriptive or reference grammar. It is a textbook. It takes the reader (student) into the text of the New Testament directly, right after learning the alphabet and sounds. Starting with sentences of the simplest kind, it systematically and methodically takes you on a journey working through New Testament Greek of gradually increasing complexity. Very early you are being guided to translate entire Bible verses on your own. Organized into 39 lessons, the book gives you a close to immersion experience in the language and idiom of the New Testament, with the principal goal of training to read, understand, and interpret the text. In this approach, and the way it is done, the book is without a peer. Each lesson begins with guided reading through sentence selections for which vocabulary and grammatical help is provided in workbook format. Following this the new grammar is presented in an organized fashion. There are exercises, drills, and additional readings provided to reinforce the lessons and to extend the knowledge. Although the book is structured to work through examples inductively and then learn the grammar in the grammar section, one can study the grammar first and then take advantage of the guided reading. For those unfamiliar with grammatical and linguistic terminology, each lesson has at the very front a section that introduces grammatical concepts and terminology, illustrating facts with English examples. This is almost a book in itself. Learning a language seldom occurs without effort. This book is designed with the goal of maximum payoff for the effort put in. It aims to develop competence in the actual language of the text by presenting the forms of words, the structure of sentences, and meaning and usage, all as related parts. Learn vocabulary in context, and in doing so learn the most frequent words of the New Testament. New Testament Greek: A Whole Language Approach integrates the typical content of beginning and intermediate courses, and leaves plenty of opportunity with additional reading, drills etc., and the details presented, to go beyond them. Thoroughly tested in graduate and undergraduate classrooms over half a decade by several teachers, this book is ideal for college and seminary instruction of New Testament Greek to do exegesis, for recovering lost or forgotten knowledge through self-study, to prepare for graduate examinations on New Testament Greek, and to teach oneself the language of the New Testament. There is a detailed index and appendices of summary charts of forms with references to sections in the book. Additional audio-visual aids are available by contacting the publisher.

With CD Students of New Testament Greek face at least two major hurdles: building a working vocabulary necessary for effective exegesis, and learning to identify (parse) the plethora of grammatically fluctuating forms that appear in the biblical text. In Mastering New Testament Greek, the revised and expanded third edition of Mastering Greek Vocabulary, Thomas Robinson offers learners an inventive set of tools for meeting these challenges. At the heart of Robinson's ingenious vocabulary mastery system is the cognate group, in which Greek words are linked together according to the roots they share in common. By associating common Greek roots with the words that contain them, students are able to build a working vocabulary far more quickly than by merely learning a list of individual words. Mastering New Testament Greek provides additional vocabulary help by offering comprehensive lists of cognates, derivatives, suffixes, and prefixes that correlate Greek words with their English counterparts. Added features assist students to master common pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and prepositions: * The Index of Greek Word Endings, an innovative feature of this expanded edition, enables Greek students to look up Greek words in reverse alphabetical order to analyze baffling grammatical forms. * Mastering New Testament Greek also comes with a CD packed with user-friendly software programs that support and expand the utilities contained in the book. * Software modules assist students in learning the Greek alphabet and vocabulary, pronouncing words, reviewing verb paradigms, and parsing difficult grammatical forms. * The software is also linked to a complete online Greek grammar. Taken together, the tools contained in Mastering New Testament Greek and in the accompanying CD form an essential learning kit that students of the language of the New Testament, from beginning to advanced, will not want to be without.

This practical textbook for undergraduate students and serving ministers is specifically designed to teach the reader about New Testament Greek, and to enrich the readers understanding of Scripture. Exploring New Testament Greek aims to cultivate a 'feel' for the Greek language and give insight into some central issues in New Testament study without a heavy investment of time and energy. Its priorities are accessibility and relevance for Bible study: it is set out in ten short chapters that encourage learning through a variety of practical exercises, and concentrates on those aspects of the language that lead directly to increased understanding of the text. Rather than overwhelming the student with tables of grammar and vocabulary, the book directs students in the use of free websites, interlinear translations and other readily-available language tools as a means of making a little knowledge go a long way. The first guide to New Testament Greek to assume no prior knowledge of the language and prioritise quick and effective means of learning. Peter Kevern is a theologian and educationalist, currently Director of Studies at the Queen's Foundation, Birmingham. Paula Gooder is a freelance biblical lecturer and writer. She has extensive experience teaching both Greek and Hebrew at higher education level.

Since 1914 Cambridge has published The Elements of New Testament Greek, a best-selling textbook for scholars and students of the Bible. The original book by H. P. V. Nunn was replaced and succeeded in 1965 by J. W. Wenham's book of the same title; now Jeremy Duff has produced a new book to continue this long-established tradition into the twenty-first century. This audio CD set accompanies the new third edition of 'The Elements'. It contains the vocabulary lists, reading passages, and paradigms from the book, read aloud so as to enable students to reinforce their familiarity with the Greek alphabet and the sound of the Greek words. This will particularly benefit those students whose learning style is strongly auditory, but will enhance the progress of many others by facilitating study even when away from their books.

While the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece is designed for scholarly research, the Greek New Testament, 4th Revised Edition is designed for translators and students. Like NA27, this is the leading edition of the original text of the New Testament. It contains the same Greek text as NA27, differing only in some details of punctuation and paragraphing. The format of UBS4 is in several respects more user-friendly for students and translators than NA27. It has a more spacious appearance and a larger font. English sub-headings assist in navigating the text for those who may be less familiar with Greek. Old Testament quotations appear in easily recognizable bold font. Synoptic parallels are clearly listed under English headings. The critical apparatus includes exegetically significant variants (fewer than NA27) but adds extensive manuscript evidence (more than NA27) for each variant, thereby offering in-depth instruction for students on how variants and the evidence for them work together. An introduction in English is included.

Dr. Levinsohn, with expertise in both New Testament Greek and discourse analysis, wrote this coursebook for use in classroom lectures and discussion groups, as well as for self-instruction. He draws on his research and his experience in seminars, teach-ins, and courses as he describes discourse features that he and other researchers have studied in depth. For maximum benefit, students should already have some basic familiarity with discourse analysis and some knowledge of Koiné Greek. They do not need extensive knowledge of Greek vocabulary, but do need the ability to identify the case of a noun, the tense-aspect of a verb, and to distinguish participial, relative, and main clauses. The seventeen chapters cover topics such as constituent order, sentence conjunctions, patterns of reference, back grounding and highlighting, and reporting conversations. Discourse features are illustrated from passages of the New Testament. Most sections include review questions to assist the student in applying the principles. This text is part of a set of materials designed to facilitate the teaching and the learning of New Testament Greek. The title reflects my hope that these materials will be used in a wide range of settings: the traditional classroom at various levels, home schooling, review for clergy and classes within their parishes, and individual study. The text, along with the accompanying workbook and study guide, represents my attempt to provide as clear explanatory material as possible. I have tried to point out those places which often cause difficulty and I have tried, as much as possible, to offer explanations in easy to understand language. I sometimes describe myself as a guide who has been over the territory many times and knows where all the potholes and road blocks are. My intent is to guide you through and around these to an understanding of how Greek works. I have enjoyed producing these materials over the years and my students claim that they have enjoyed using them to learn Greek. I hope that you will complete our joy by making good use of them and by making your own discovery of the adventure of New Testament Greek. From the Preface Clear and helpful explanations, at times even conversational in tone, and subject material organized in a way which is extremely conducive to learning and enjoyment make Greek For All Ages an essential foundation for any Koine Greek student. Home-schoolers, church study groups, and seminarians alike will benefit greatly from this comprehensive yet approachable Greek course. The Rev. Tara Jernigan, M.A.R. Ann's material, both its content and its presentation, provided me with a solid foundation as I began learning Greek in seminary. Through seminary and beyond, as I continued my studies in biblical interpretation, I used her material as a resource both for reviewing broad concepts as well as for seeking clarification on the finer nuances of Greek. As I prepare to teach cross-culturally, I am beyond grateful to have Ann s textbook as a means for providing a clear and engaging introduction to Greek for students in East Africa. ... Read more
The student or translator of the New Testament will often find difficulties which can only be solved by considering the syntax of the passage concerned. Professor Moule here provides a reference book which gives guidance on such problems of exegesis. It is a work which presupposes a knowledge of Greek and makes frequent allusions to the standard works; it is intended primarily for theological students. After an introductory section on 'The Language of the New Testament' Professor Moule considers in turn particular syntactical divisions (tenses, moods, voices, cases), certain parts of speech and types of clauses, and idiosyncrasies in usage. The last four chapters are 'The order of words', 'Semitisms', 'Latinisms', and 'Miscellaneous notes on style'. In each section New Testament usages are defined and distinguished. A number of examples of each type of problem are discussed. They were chosen as being sufficiently representative to provide a guide to the treatment of similar difficulties.

A Grammar for New Testament Greek will serve as a concise, authoritative introduction to the study of the language in which the New Testament was written. Written with a variety of learning contexts in mind, this volume will be an essential tool to those whose study of Greek will take place in the classroom, and to those who wish to refresh their knowledge of the language by private study. This book has many invaluable features. The arrangement of the chapters was designed to introduce students to the distinction between the present and the aorist tenses, as well as acquaint them with special forms such as the "-mi" verbs, early on in the grammar. The vocabulary has been oriented more closely to the frequency with which words appear in the New Testament, highlighting certain common New Testament terms. A thorough reference section at the end of the book makes the book helpful to those who wish to look up grammatical forms as they read and translate the Greek New Testament. There is a complete discussion of the different elements of Greek grammar, and how they convey meaning. The exercises draw closely on the Greek text of the New Testament in their choice, not only of vocabulary, but of word order and phrasing as well. The purpose is to acquaint students, as early as possible, with the kind of vocabulary and sentence structure that they will encounter in the Greek New Testament.
