Surprising Engaging Educational Toy

Pros: Compact Portable Educational Diversions for Kids Age 3 -8
Cons: Games $20 - $25
The Bottom Line:
Great educational toy! To get the longest usage I'd recommend purchasing this for 3 year olds and then upgrading the games as the child grows.
My daughter received the Leapfrog Leapster L Max as a gift shortly after her 3rd birthday along with the Pet Pals game cartridge. I was sure that she was too young but was I wrong. The recommended ages are 3-4 years; 5-7 years and 8-11 years I assume depending on which game cartridge is being used. The electronic “pen” is easy for her toddler hands to manipulate to move from screen to screen. The arrows and A/B buttons are also intuitive and easy for a toddler to navigate. Her other electronic computer toys have a mouse which she still has difficulty correlating to what is on the screen which leads to frustration. The graphics are basic but delightful to her. Unlike other Leapster games, this model comes with some built in games; Scooby and a Drawing game. The unit takes 4 AA batteries which we haven’t had to replace yet, and as a result haven’t purchased the battery charger. The portability of the Leapster L Max is the biggest selling point. Long checkout lines and car trips become a breeze when Mom pulls out her “computer” as entertainment. Even on flights, the Leapster L Max is appropriate as the volume is low enough not to annoy fellow travelers. I purchase new game cartridges before long car trips as a special surprise. The games are around $20, but can be found on sale from time to time. This model also can be attached to a television screen, but we’ve never opted to do so. My 6 year old God Daughter also loves playing with this educational toy, so I’m hopeful that the appeal will last for a couple of years.
