Kiss And Tell (1945) Shirley Temple, Jerome CourtlandDirector: Richard WallaceCo-stars: Walter Abel, Katharine Alexander, Robert Benchley90 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALLIf there were any doubts that little Shirley Temple was all grown up by 1945, those doubts were disippated by her appearance in Columbia's Kiss and Tell. Based on the mildly risque stage comedy by F. Hugh Herbert, the film casts Temple as impulsive teenager Corliss Archer, who is the only person in on the secret marriage between her GI brother and local girl Mildred Pringle (Virginia Welles). When Mildred becomes pregnant, Corliss can't reveal the marriage, since the Archers and the Pringles aren't overly fond of one another. Thus it is that Corliss herself pretends to be expecting, intending to claim Mildred's baby as her own. She further identifies her next-door boyfriend Dexter Franklin (Jerome Courtland) as the father, opening yet another can of worms. Somehow this mess straightens itself out, but not before several "chancy" scenes and lines of dialogue that must have given the Hollywood censors headaches aplenty. Kiss and Tell (the original play, that is) not only spawned a 1949 movie sequel, A Kiss for Corliss, but also inspired the popular radio and TV sitcom Meet Corliss Archer.

The Kiss Before The Mirror (1933) Nancy Carroll, Frank MorganDirector: James WhaleCo-stars: Paul Lukas, Gloria Stuart, Jean Dixon, Donald Cook, Charley Grapewin, Walter Pidgeon67 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALLHorror film icon James Whale directed this well-detailed thriller about a man questioning his wife's honesty after a friend begins to doubt his own. Dr. Paul Held (Frank Morgan) is an attorney who has been asked to come to the aid of his old friend Walter Bernsdorf (Paul Lukas); Bernsdorf has been accused of killing his wife, and he wants Held to defend him in court. Bernsdorf admits to shooting his spouse, but he tells Held that he lost control when he found out his wife was having an affair. Held takes on his friend's case, but as he pours over the facts in the Bernsdorf slaying, he finds himself wondering about the fidelity of his own wife, Maria (Nancy Carroll) -- and begins to seethe with jealousy when he find that she has indeed been sleeping with another man. A Kiss Before The Mirror also features actress Gloria Stuart; James Whale would remake the same story six years later, under the title Wives Under Suspicioun.

Kiss The Blood Off My Hands (1948) Joan Fontaine, Burt LancasterDirector: Norman FosterCo-stars: Robert Newton, Lewis L. Russell, Aminta Dyne79 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALL In this film noir drama, Bill Saunders (Burt Lancaster) is a former Prisoner of War living in England whose experiences have left him emotionally unstable and prone to violence. One night, while drinking in a pub, he gets into an argument with the owner which quickly escalates into a brutal fist fight; Bill kills the publican and flees with the police giving chase. Bill is given shelter by Jane Wharton (Joan Fontaine), a kind-hearted nurse who believes Bill when he tells her that the killing was an accident and that he's innocent of any wrongdoing. Bill soon gets in a fight with a policeman and ends up in jail, but Jane, who has fallen in love with Bill, still has faith in him, and upon his release she finds him a job driving a truck delivering drugs for the clinic where she works. Career criminal Harry Carter (Robert Newton), who witnessed Bill's murder of the pub owner, now sees a perfect opportunity for blackmail, and he forces Bill to tip him off for his next major drug shipment, which can then be routed to the black market at a high profit. Bill has little choice but to agree, but when Jane ends up tagging along when Bill is to make the delivery in question, he refuses to jeopardize her and makes the delivery to the clinic without incident. This quickly earns Harry's wrath, and they soon find themselves at the mercy of a very dangerous man. Miklos Rozsa composed the film's highly effective score.

Debbie Reynolds steals this show as Maggie, a showgirl dying to marry rich, but ready to live poor after she plants her lips on hunky Glenn Ford. Ford is penniless air force sergant Joe Fitzpatrick, whose good luck wins him first prize in a raffle--a forty thousand dollar car. When Fitzpatrick is transferred to Spain, not only do the wife and car follow, but so does trouble. His C.O. is highly suspicious of Fitzpatrick's good fortune, and a highly celebrated toreador is more than a bit jealous. If this weren't enough trouble, wife Maggie becomes worried that Fitzpatrick only married her for her looks, and decides to cut off all conjugal relations with Joe to make sure. With costar Eva Gabor making a big noise and light-handed director George Marshall at the helm, IT STARTED WITH A KISS is nothing but 1950s fun.

A pair of young runaways find both beauty and danger in the big city in an evocative drama from writer and director Lance Daly. Dylan Shane Curry is an 11-year-old boy growing up with an alcoholic father who often uses his children as punching bags. One day Dylan decides he can take no more and he makes plans to run away from home. His close friend Kylie Kelly O'Neill a girl of ten living next door is also the product of an abusive family and when she learns that Dylan is leaving home she steals a wad of cash from her family and joins him. Making their way out of town on a barge driven by a sympathetic sailor with a yen for music Dylan and Kylie end up in Dublin just as the Christmas season is going into full swing. The two friends explore the city which seems magical even at its shabbiest. But while Dublin seems like a paradise of lights and magic by day they learn that the city's sinister side comes into focus after the sun goes down. KISSES also stars Stephen Rea and Paul Roe.

Kiss the Boys Goodbye (1941) Don Ameche, Mary MartinDirector: Victor SchertzingerCo-stars: Oscar Levant, Virginia Dale, Barbara Jo Allen85 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALLThe nationwide search for an actress to play Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind formed the basis of Claire Booth Luce's satirical Broadway comedy Kiss the Boys Goodbye. By the time the film version came out in 1941, Gone With the Wind was yesterday's news, but the picture still manage to elicit loud laughter from moviegoers bombarded by bad news from Europe. When Broadway producer Bert Fusher (Jerome Cowan) decides to produce a lavish musical version of a best-selling civil war novel, he dispatches director Lloyd Lloyd (Don Ameche) and composer Dick Rayburn (Oscar Levant) to the Deep South, in search of a genuine Southern-belle leading lady. Lloyd and Rayburn end up on the Georgia plantation of Tom Rumson (Raymond Walburn), where they are forced to sit through an impromptu audition by Rumson's niece Cindy Lou Bethany (Mary Martin). Lloyd can't stand the girl, but Rayburn is enchanted by her-never suspecting that Cindy Lou is a phony, who prior to this meeting had never stepped below the Mason-Dixon line. Eventually, Lloyd and Cindy Lou fall in love and the show goes on. Many of playwright Luce's more pointed barbs have been blunted by the Hollywood censors, with the more pungent gags replaced by lavish musical numbers. Still, Kiss the Boys Goodbye is a lot of fun, especially whenever the magnificent Elizabeth Patterson (cast as Mary Martin's unreconstructed-southerner aunt) takes center stage.

They All Kissed The Bride (1942) Joan Crawford, Melvyn DouglasDirector: Alexander HallCo-stars: Roland Young, Billie Burke, Allen Jenkins85 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALLJoan Crawford is the kissable bride of the title--but when the film opens, matrimony is the farthest thing from her mind. Crawford becomes a big-time executive upon inheriting her father's trucking business, which leaves her no time for such trivialities as romance. To enhance her business, Crawford arranges a marriage of convenience for her younger sister (Helen Parrish). At the wedding, Crawford meets reporter Melvyn Douglas, who is out to discredit Crawford....and you know what's coming next. They All Kissed the Bride was one of several 1942 productions originally slated for Carole Lombard, whose sudden death in a plane crash required all the major studios to reshuffle their production schedules to come up with last-minute Lombard replacements.
