Pros: Easy to use. Comes with software to edit video and capture stills. Small & lightweight
Cons: Cannot find third party battery that is compatible. JVC batteries are expensive
The Bottom Line:
Great as a camcorder and since its digital allows for many hours of fun in the editing room. It is also a fair compromise to use as a digital camera.
My wife wanted a digital camera. I wanted a camcorder. With the JVC GR-DVL510U we have the best of both worlds. Images are crystal clear as a camcorder and very good as a digital camera. Snapshot mode allows for still pictures or you can pull still pictures from within the video. Included software and USB cable allow you to download and edit video and photos to your computer and then save in HTML format if you want to put an album on a web page. Very comfortable to carry and use due to its small size and light weight, yet easily maintains a steady frame. Fantastic zoom capability allows for great close ups from a distance.
The one downside is the camcorder's proprietary batteries. Many brands of camcorder have third party vendors who supply alternate batteries - usually much less expensive. I am not yet aware of any third party vendors for the JVC batteries and they run about $100.00 a piece.
I own several JVC products and this camcorder is one of the reasons I continue to purchase them.
