Pros: Still shot on SD card, night shot, auto light
Cons: None so far. Just received it back from JVC per a recall.
The Bottom Line:
Make sure if you get this product used that it's been repaired as per the recall from JVC.
I initially purchased this product 1 1/2 years ago to record my then 4 and 6 year olds. I chose the JVC GR-D72U because of the multitasking it could perform - if only marginally. I liked that it could record but also had a still shot feature that was recorded on a separate memory card (it takes an SD card). I don't remember the megipixels off hand, but it wasn't that high. It has a "snap shot" button right next to the zoom so it's very easy to get those still moments....however, they are not meant for large photos. For moments that I wanted to captured but just couldn't get to the camera with the camcorder in hand, this seemed a sure thing.
It also has a flip screen so I could turn the view screen all the way around so my kids could see themselves when they were younger.
This camcorder also has "Auto LED Illumini Light" as well as a "night shot" feature to help in low light situations. The optical zoom is pretty good as well. With 16x optical zoom (don't ever settle for digital zoom) and the other features I thought it was PERFECT.
Now as great as it sounds I ran into a problem.
About 2 months in I started getting wide lines on my recordings. I tried a cleaner thinking that it might be the heads (although I wasn't quite sure why, after only 2 months, it would be having this problem.) It cleared up the lines for half the day. Now I have the same problems. Frustrated, I let it sit. Now it's been a 1 1/2 years I haven't been able to record my 6 and 8 year olds because I didn't feel like chucking this one for a new one after putting the money out.
So, in theory it sounds great, but since I haven't been able to use it for most of it's life in my possession I'm sure I'll be putting out the money for a new one so I don't miss this years my boys are growing up.
UPDATE: AFTER RECEIVING A COMMENT FROM "nc10" ABOUT A RECALL I SENT MY CAMCORDER IN PER THE WEB PAGE PROVIDED AND HAD IT BACK TO ME WITHIN 2 WEEKS FULLY OPERATIONAL! SO FAR SO GOOD!!!
