Migration is not easy
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Same easy interface as always.
Cons: Hasn't improved enough to justify upgrade. Migration not seamless + A few small, annoying things.
The Bottom Line:
Use it, just be aware...
Many of us who use ACT are long-time users. I really, really like ACT & will continue to use it. Personally, I followed ACT as they went through the Symantec buyout. Symantec made great (and necessary) improvements to an already good product -- at first. Then they seemed to lose interest and didn't do anything much toward the end of their ownership of ACT (understandable). It then returned to the hands of its original creator, Saleslogix, which appears nowadays to be a division of Best Software. The support falls way short of what you'd expect from ACT, which has always been popular software. The program has been made to look different, which I think fools you into thinking it has been updated, but as you get into the everyday use of it, the new glossy look may be all smoke and mirrors. The new version doesn't seem to do much that the old one didn't do. That makes me think. Did they only fix problems? Most software companies give away patches free for this.
Today's ACT has some major drawbacks as well. The migration to, say Windows XP is not easy. One example: ACT doesn't change the links of the documents in history to accomodate the new windows style (e.g. using a "shared documents" folder and having all my documents folders in a new location "c:\documents and settings\user name". If you want to change your links so that they will actually work, you have to buy something called a "link migration wizard" for $29.95.
We also had a lot of trouble with user permissions on the corporate network, even when following the instructions ACT provided.
For a short time, ACT forced you to register on their web site, just to ask a question. I'm not sure if they are still doing that. This is a small thing, but annoying, and no one else in the industry (including much larger companies) require you to do this. I move around from PC to PC, and got tired of entering all that info or trying to retrieve my user name and password, which was sent to me by e-mail that arrived at my desk, not the desk I was at!
Another small annoyance; In entering the serial number, it would not accept lowercase letters. Anyone out there realize how easy it is to write a quick script to convert them to uppercase so that the software can accept the letters? Why make the customer re-enter them? Again, not a big deal, but just shows either arrogance or lack of attention to detail, I'm not sure which.
ACT is still great software, just a few things for them to think about.
