Most know them only as the apparitions who materialize to work their elusive magic on cryptic error messages and computer meltdowns, before vanishing just as suddenly as they appeared. But in this British sitcom, the long-suffering workers known as the I.T. Department finally get their due. Fans of THE OFFICE will likely enjoy this bubbling workplace satire, which focuses on hot-tempered techno-toiler Roy (Chris O?Dowd), hapless nerd Moss (Richard Ayoade), and their pretty, computer-illiterate manager, Jen (Katherine Parkinson). From their dilapidated den in the basement of a London skyscraper, the team fight a daily battle against impaired office equipment, malfunctioning employees, and their delightfully deranged boss, Denholm Reynholm (Christopher Morris). This collection presents the first season of the series. Minimize

IT Crowd - The Complete First Season

The IT Crowd - A comedy about tech support

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Tons of really funny moments

Cons: The Moss character is too much of a stereotype

The Bottom Line:
If you work in IT or like to make fun if the people in your IT department, you need to watch this show.

Author's Review
Being that I work in IT (Information Technology), I am naturally drawn to movies and TV shows that depict the use of computers. Most of the time they are misrepresented, as are stereotypical computer nerds, although I will admit that I've run across a few techies who have fit the stereotype a little too well. The IT Crowd is a comedy series from the BBC that follows the exploits of a tech support department in a large English company. If you work in IT, you need to watch this show.

The series begins with a pretty redhead named Jen (Katherine Parkinson) lying her way through a job interview so that she can be put in charge of the IT department, though she clearly doesn't know squat about computers. Lucky for her, neither does the boss. The interview is hilarious and sets the tone for the series as something most IT people can relate to - the fact that most people really don't know squat about computers. When she introduces herself to the two techs she will manage, they go ballistic.

The two real computer techs are Roy and Moss, played by Chris O'Dowd and Richard Ayoade. Roy is sort of your average computer guy. He's of slim build and slightly nerdy, though he does manage to hurt and/or bloody himself up in almost every episode. Moss, on the other hand, is a walking stereotype with giant black glasses, puffy hair, and an ensemble of clothes that looks like he walked right out of Revenge of the Nerds. I didn't like the Moss character quite as much because he was always so over the top.

For a comedy, this show only has one catchphrase that pops up in almost every episode, and it's when the guys receive a tech support call. They answer the phone, then ask if either the computer is plugged in or if they have turned it off and back on again. As someone who has worked in IT for years, I have to tell you that a simple reboot fixes at least half of the usual calls we get to tech support. People make fun of us for telling them to reboot, but it really does fix a lot of issues, especially in the early days of Windows 95/98. The show never gets bogged down in technical details for the sake of the audience.

There's tons of truly funny material in the six episodes that make up this first season of the show. One of my favorites is when Roy tells the company manager that he installed a new voice-activated program on his PC and all he has to do is tell the computer what he wants it to do. The boss spends the rest of the episode screaming at the computer. It's awesome. In another one of the crazier episodes, Moss manages to convince someone in the office that Jen is dead, and this sets off a chain of events that makes one guy think he is seeing her ghost over and over.

The humor in this show is mostly rated PG-13, and I think there were only a couple of profanities. The BBC has different rules than we have in the U.S. as far as what gets broadcast. If you are a fan of The Office or work in computers, I think you should check out this series. It ran for three seasons and I can't wait to see the rest of them. If you have Netflix, you can actually watch the entire first season of The IT Crowd online.
