The Hyundai Sonata is a roomy and comfortable midsize sedan with a level of quality and refinement that may surprise you the first time you get in and take a good look. It costs less than the name brands, but measures up well against them. Front and rear accommodations are roomy and comfortable for four or five. The interior is nicely finished and has a general feeling of quality. Driving the Sonata is convenient and hassle-free with well-designed controls located exactly where expected. The styling is distinctive, sleek and rounded with rich-looking details. Sonata cruises comfortably down the highway, even at elevated speeds. Its steering is sharp and responsive. The V6-powered Sonata GLS and LX deliver satisfying performance. Minimize

Lots of Car for the Money...

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Price, Warranty, Features, Styling, Comfort

Cons: Radio, door alarm

The Bottom Line:
A nice, comfortable, well running car for the money. Opt for the V6 - plenty of power. The 4cyl is kind of doggy in a car of this size.

Between the excellent warranty, and the overall quality and features that you get for the money, I think the Sonata is an excellent value.

I spend a lot of time driving on the road, and the 2004 that I purchased at the end of that model year is nearing 100,000 trouble free miles. Besides doing regular service, I have had very few troubles with the car, and none of them had to do with how the car runs/drives.

This car is very sharp looking; personally I like this body style a lot better than the new Sonata models. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and the controls and dash are well laid out, except for the poorly placed Cruise Control switch at the bottom of the dash that you have to bend forward to turn on.

The lowest point is the factory radio - I am on my third CD/Cassette combo stereo; the first one ate discs, the second had the AM radio go out, and now the third is just starting to do strange things like switch stations without touching the buttons. I think I am ready to opt for a good aftermarket stereo system to replace the fluky factory unit.

Another thing that I have had a consistent problem with is that the door ajar alarm on the driver side likes to ding whenever you go around a corner. After two trips to the dealer with no avail, I was able to fix it by gluing a small piece of rubber to the door jamb to close the gap between the switch and the striker.

Overall, besides these minor issues, the 2004 Sonata has been a great car.
