The first sport utility vehicle from South Koreas leading automaker was a four-door, five-passenger wagon. Loosely based on the compact Sonata sedans platform, the Santa Fe was priced to compete with compact car-based SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and new Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute. Hyundais version was wider and heavier, with the biggest cargo capacity in its class.

The Bottom Line:
If you are not an off-roader and desire a car-like ride, don't look any further.
Extremely happy with purchase. We test drove the Santa Fe and the Ford Escape. While the Escape was nice, it just didn't measure up to the aggressive styling, comfort, and car-like ride of the Santa Fe; not to mention the peace of mind you get with the warranty and roadside assistance! The Santa Fe feels like a refined high-priced vehicle. Several family members were stunned that it was a Hyundai. Neighbors too, word is getting out and each day I see more and more on the highways. No major complaints except for the stereo. I like the Cd & cassette combo but as a music lover the sound quality could be much better. Overall - a steal with looks that separate from the crowd!!
