Be sure of what you want with a car.  If you are looking for an every day commuter to save on gas, Hyundai Elantra is the best way to go.

I bought this the 2001 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl, 2.0 Liter, Automatic 4 Speed, brand new with only 30 miles on it. I was looking for a dependable car that would last me a long time, considering I was just starting out on my own. Today, I am proud to say that it has over 100k miles on it and it runs very well.

I found the best characteristics of this vehicle includes:

Dependability - I had no serious issues with this car.  As long as you keep up with the maintenance (timing belt, oil changes etc), the car will love you back.

Fast -  For a 4 cyl automatic car - I never found it to be a low geared car.  Many times I had to floor the gas peddle while getting on the highway, it never failed me.

Fuel Consumption -  I found that I get approximately 30 MPG (miles per gallon) while on the high way.  I have noticed a decrease, approximately 25 MPG in the city.  This would depend on how well my tires were inflated.

A few minor problems that I have found with the 2001 Hyundai Elantra include:

Headlights burn out - Since this vehicle did not come with daytime running head lights, I keep them on.  This may or may not have been a factor in how often they burned out, but I replaced them every 2 months.  I was told by a Hyundai specialist that you must get Hyundai's light bulbs so that they will last longer, instead of ones you buy at a regular store.  This however, made it very inconvenient.  Who has time to get down to the service station before 5pm during the week?

The windshield fogs up - I've had other cars along with my Hyundai Elantra.  For some reason this car's windshield fogs up too easily.  I had to play around with the vents and with a combination of a cracked window, I manage to correct this problem.  I shouldn't have to worry about this while I'm driving though.

Check engine light - This was on for about a year (and and off).  My husband fiddled with different fuses and it's magically gone.  We know that the car was working fine, but it still was a bit unnerving to see the light go on for no apparent reason.
