The Honeywell Purifier Works! (but only in one place.)

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Lightweight, effective, and cleans well at high power.

Cons: The filter can’t be easily cleaned. That sucks.

The Bottom Line:
Its lightweight, easy installment, and portability make up for the fact that it can’t clean the entire house at once. At least it doesn't have that ugly cylinder shape.

As I’m typing this review a Honeywell 16060 Air Purifier is taking in dusty air and releasing much cleaner air. I bought this 8-inch high and 11-inch wide little box at a local Home Depot, while my friend was hunting for a new light for his room. He was shocked when I spontaneously picked it out of the shelf, along with a replacement filter. I then informed by sister about the purchase via cell phone for added effect.

I bought this Honeywell purifier because of how dusty my room is. I have a floor carpet that’s a bit old, and over time it may generate dust. Also I have countless books on the shelf, and over time they gather dust. A lot more dust gathers in my apartment from clothing, which I carelessly drop to the floor sometimes.

For energy conservation reasons I almost always keep it low when activating the Honeywell. It doesn’t make knocking noises when the fan is on, although I can’t say it functions quietly. It’s very effective in what it does but a little too small to work in every part of the house at once. Generally it works over time, taking in airborne dust and other particles that can be seen floating around all over the place. In short, the Honeywell Air Purifier is a sort of standing dust remover, and in vacuuming airborne dust that’s where it really excels.

Since it’s designed to filter only to a 6-foot radius, it can only work in one room at a time. And so it’s highly recommended that it be used in the dustiest rooms. Its effect on big smells, especially from the kitchen and bathroom, is debatable, but since smells on mildew and fungi can grow on surfaces with too much dust, I guess that’s a fair deal. For added benefit, the Honeywell weighs something like 3.6 pounds, making it very portable and versatile, easy to carry around from room to room without too much of a hassle.

The main flaw is with the filter. The side covering and back wedges in the filter are made out of paper, which means that to wash it or soak it would render it prone to being soft and easily torn, rendering it useless. This particular one I have will last until about May, when it will fill up with all matters of allergens and need to be replaced. (Thank the Lord I remembered to buy a second filter just in case.) Vacuuming the filter to remove the particles on the surface isn't recommended either.

Here’s a very good tip on how to use the Honeywell: Place the purifier in the middle of your room. Get a feather duster and start brushing away at any very dusty shelf, desk, bed, or whatever nook and cranny you can find. When the massive airborne dust and other allergens overwhelms your room and you begin to sneeze, turn the purifier on to HIGH. You’ll see the thing immediately start working miracles. It works for me every time.
