A common feature of these new hybrids is that they maximize fuel economy and minimize emissions by combining a small gasoline-fueled engine with a powerful battery and an electric motor. Electric power is used to supplement the engines power, allowing the use of a smaller and more fuel-efficient engine. As well, the gasoline engine and electric motor/generator can recharge the battery, unlike in an electric car where the battery has to be plugged in to an external power source

Pros: great gas milage, fun to drive, great car
Cons: hard to find parts, like wheels
The Bottom Line:
great car to drive to work, nothing too fancy, but very ecomical
I have the 2001 insight and have loved it since day 1. now that i have about 30K miles on it it gets better gas mileage (66-78) and is very quiet. there is more road noise than anything else. The only problem I have is that the wheel from the dealer are almost 400$ each, and I hit a pot hole. finding them is hard, and they are too thin for most shops to repair. The sound system, and speed is mediocre, but the gas mileage is where this car shines. It is nice to only fill up ever 6 or 700 miles. the bucket seats are nice as well, although hard to clean
