Honda spruced up the Civic for 99 with minor appearance changes front and rear, plus a revamped dashboard with amber lighting and rotary climate controls in place of sliding levers. Two additional models were added in midyear. The 4-door VP was produced in limited numbers and included air conditioning, keyless entry, and special paint. Also a limited-production model, the 2-door Si got a 160-horsepower engine, 5-speed manual transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes, a rear spoiler, and low-profile tires on 15-inch wheels.

1999 Civic
I was looking to buy my first car and I was 17 and highly impatient. I knew that civics had a reputation of lasting a long time and being good on gas. So I looked in the newspaper and called around to some of the ads for used Honda civics. I found a 1999 Honda civic with 93,000 miles on it. The body and cabin, along with under the hood looked clean and well maintained. I had no experience with cars so I took my chances that the previous owner was honest. I bought the car for 6,500 dollars because that was all I had. I had no skills at negotiating the price or even knowing what a good price was. The car drove well for about a month. Then the alternator belt broke and the car stalled on a major intersection. It also went into shift lock and there was absolutely no power because the battery was totally drained. I took it to firestone and they replaced the belt. The next day it burnt off again. This happened two more times until the people at Firestone told me I needed an all new alternator because mine was messed up but they couldnt tell me why or how it got that way. So 700 dollars later I have a fully functional car. Four months later the muffler starts making a loud noise; 300 dollars later I have a fully functional car. Two months after this the Odometer FREEZES at 99,999 miles. The next month the car starts to kick and buck while I accelerate, the guys at Pep Boys tell me that the transmission is about to completely go. The job was going to cost 1800 dollars. I gave up with this car and ended up buying my next car from a DEALER, with a WARRANTY.

Pros: when it WAS working it drove pretty well.
Cons: fell apart after 93,000 miles
The Bottom Line:
probably a good car if you have some sort of warranty on it or buy it with low mileage.
