Pros: Once past the difficult installation and updates, works well.
Cons: Won't write closed captions on VHS tape to DVD; won't write 5.1 soundtracks
Was difficult to install software and get working. There are firmware updates at hp.com - load these after installing program - also update the ArcSoft Showbiz software from the arcsoft.com website. May involve some registry setting editing (workaround available at hp.com).
The HP DC3000 will only write to DVD+R (not DVD-R); the HP media, Memorex, and Fry's Electronics GQ media all work well. What does NOT work is the TDK 16X 'PrintOn' discs (OEM'd by CMC in Taiwan), so buy a small quantity of discs to try out before purchasing a lot of discs.
Once setup (this can take days), the media writer works very well for archiving VHS libraries to DVD.
