TV and Radio on your computer

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Remote Control, Fairly Inexpensive, Record TV to your hard drive

Cons: There are models with better/more features in same price range

The Bottom Line:
Its a basic tuner card for watching/recording TV and FM radio. But for the same price there are better models available.

I recently got into this phase of turning my computer into a total multimedia machine. I got this card because it was the cheapest one that came with TV/FM radio and a remote (which really comes in handy). The card was simple to install and I quickly had it up and running. The FM reception is fantastic, but it only allows for simple stereo sound, only sends signal to the front two speakers. This occurs with the TV function as well. Maybe there is a way to fix this by playing with the settings, but I haven't been able to do so. The TV quality is decent, I'm only using a regular receiver, no cable hookup. Even with a good signal, I think picture quality is not as good as on an actual television. This probably varies depending on the quality of your monitor. I have noticed that applications slow down a bit when I leave the TV screen on in the desktop while working on other things. I've used the record function, and it works fairly well, you can either record instantly or set a specific time to start recording. Interestingly enough, when I play back the recorded file in Windows Media Player, I get sound through all my speakers. All in all, its a decent tv card, but I would probably get a different brand next time. The Leadtek Winfast tuner card is roughly the same price but comes with some useful additional features like picture in picture and time shift (pause it to go to the bathroom, it'll pick up where you left off).
