Housed in a smooth, modern-looking design, this 1000-watt electric kettle rapidly boils up to 1 quart of water for coffee, tea, instant soups, and more. The unit features a detachable cord and a nonspill spout for graceful serving, plus a generous handle with a secure grip. Its immersed heating element provides a rapid and quiet heating process, making it ideal for the office, home, or college dorm. Dual water-level indicators allow for convenient filling, and the unit's easy-open lid is designed with a security lock to prevent spilling. And there's no need to worry about leaving it on, the kettle automatically shuts off when the water boils, and its boil-dry protection keeps the unit from boiling when there's no water left. The kettle measures approximately 9-1/6 by 5 by 7-1/3 inches and carries a 180-day limited warranty.

Cheap and super durable

Pros: Quick, automatic shut-off, and super cheap.
Cons: White plastic needs cleaning more often than other colors would (OK, I'm lazy).
The Bottom Line:
Super economical way to make sure you've got a steady supply of boiling water to make your tea!
I was waiting to write this review until I could see how it performed after time. I bought my current model for around $15 in RiteAid (although I also bought others for myself, my wife and my mother-in-law when Amazon was selling them off for about $10), and I bought it when I started a new job in June 2005.
The reason I had to buy it was because my new workplace had a coffee machine - but I'm a tea drinker, and generally at work I drink around 5-7 cups of tea (fairtrade if possible, although I'm on PG Tips at the moment, which is really not bad tea). So, I had to get a kettle. I chose this one because I hate the models that you have to leave on all the time - this particular model (which like another reviewer I also bought under the brand of Procter Silex) switches itself off after boiling the water.
Now, contrary to other reviewers, this is not the fastest kettle in the west - but it's not bad. You can boil enough for a cup of tea in just a few minutes. It boils for a few seconds before switching off, and that's the time to pour your water on the teabag for best results (then leave to steep for a few minutes - but that's advice for another review!).
After almost 3 years, the kettle still works fine with a couple of very, very minor issues. A light under the switch used to come on to show that it was in the process of boiling. That gave up when I moved jobs, but may partially have something to do with the extra work it is now doing - quite a few other people also use it now, so it's probably boiling anything between a pint and two pints (capacity is 1 liter) at least 10-15 times a day - every time without problem.
Also, after a while you start to notice limescale buildup. There are devices for putting into kettles to avoid that, but I haven't done that for this one. Most of the scale bits would be caught by the mesh filter, but really you should rinse the kettle out every day to keep the bits out of your tea. The mesh filter still looks pretty good, but with time you have to be careful that it doesn't get a bit loose and drop into your cup as you're pouring!
Those small caveats aside, I can think of no reason to not recommend this kettle wholeheartedly. It's a workhorse of a machine that has proven its ability to perform year in, year out!
