Graco Nautilus 3
When my daughter was ready to move out of her infant seat last year we knew we were going to have to move my son (2 ½) into a new seat. Frankly, I wasnt impressed with the options at the time. I wanted him to remain in a 5 point harness as long as possible. I knew I wasnt moving him into a booster for that reason, but also didnt want to spend money on a Britax Marathon or anything else that just wasnt going to last. I really liked the idea of the Britax Regent (the Frontier wasnt out yet at the time), but we needed two seats & couldnt afford to get two Regents at the time. We compromised and bought one Regent and one Graco Nautilus.
At $145.00 (what we paid at the time from Walmart) this seat was a great deal. I couldnt find any other seats that converted into a booster that came with a 5 point harness and had the height/weight limits of the Nautilus. The Nautilus is good (according to the Graco site) for children over 1 year of age, over 20 pounds and up to 65 points as a 5 point harness. It has a steel reinforced frame, offering extreme durability and energy-absorbing foam for comfort and safety. The seat then turns into a high back booster for children from 30-100 pounds, and then to a low booster seat that is for children for 40-100 pounds. But, you also have the incredible option of leaving the child in the safest restraint possible - a 5 point harness up to 65 pounds - for much longer than the average car seat.
In my humble opinion, this seat is better than any other seat currently on the market. I did a ton of research - from reading car seat message boards, to reading reviews from safety technicians. At the time that I purchased this seat it was brand new so I really had to dig up some reviews on it - most were of safety tech that were able to preview the seat or had been able to locate and offer some on-line reviews. I really liked the Regent, but the reviewers that said it was an ENORMOUS seat werent kidding. Its gigantic. As a 27 year old adult at approximately 5"4, 115 pounds, I can comfortably sit in the seat. It is very heavy and takes up a ton of room. Luckily we have a 3/4 ton Suburban, so space isnt an issue for that seat. However, I drive a 4 door sedan & while its roomy...Im glad that I have the Nautilus in the back seat since I also have a Britax Roundabout for my daughter in the back as well.
Graco says that this seat is good for any child 20 pounds and up and over 1 year. My daughter is 1 year and 1 month and 23 pounds. I currently have her in a Britax Roundabout in my car rear facing and a Britax Marathon in my husbands car, also rear facing. I tried her in the Nautilus just to see how she fit. Frankly, I didnt like it. I prefer to keep my kids rear facing as long as possible, something you cant do in the Nautilus. The Nautilus is also much more booster-like than traditional car seats and she just didnt look safe in this seat. She seemed too tiny and too vulnerable. We did move my son into the seat at 2 ½ - he weighed approximately 30 pounds at the time. He fit in this seat great & has loved it from day one. Unlike the Regent it offers a cup holder - something he didnt have in his Roundabout and, I truly didnt think we needed. We use it all of the time now, and love it. It also has inside compartments underneath the armrests where he stashes his little matchbox cars. I love that his toys stay contained and not strewn all over my car!
This is a great seat. I dont like any of the Graco convertibles, but I love their Snugride. And, as you can see, I tend to be a Britax fan when it comes to car seats. The Nautilus has totally won me over, though. I have also noticed that Babies R Us & some other sites are now selling other versions (other fabric choices) of the seat. Walmart was the first retailer to carry the seat & I believe they carry only the black and red version. Unless Amazon is running a sale, most of the other versions are more expensive. My advice is to get your seat from Walmart and/or check around for prices. Amazon usually has it for $140ish with free shipping, and my local Walmart had it in stock for $145.00. They are the same thing as the BRU versions - just different colors.

Pros: Great seat that will last a long time for a great price
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line:
I love this seat. If I have to buy another seat for my daughter when she outgrows her Roundabout, this will be it.
