The Suburban full size sport utility comes standard with daytime running lights, four wheel anti-lock brakes and a PassLock Theft-Deterrent System. The PassLock Theft-Deterrent System disables the vehicle from being started for 10 minutes if the correct key is not used. The Suburban is available in half-ton and three-quarter ton versions in either 2WD or 4WD. The Suburban is the only vehicle in its class to offer an optional diesel engine. Also available is the optional Homelink Transmitter. The standard Push Button Electronic Active Transfer Case is available in the 4WD models and will automatically engage 4WD when needed. It will revert back to 2WD for better economy when the extra traction is no longer needed. Minimize

IN A WORD... AWESOME

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Sips gas...safe, good in snow, mud, big pulling power.

Cons: Outside, sounds like a Kenworth semi, + diesel fumes

Handling And Control: 4

The Bottom Line:
Thanks to US and foreign gas cartels... Detroit makes few beefy fuel efficient Turbo Diesel vehicles like this. Versatility, strength, reliability, fuel economy.

Author's Review
OK, I've owned 2 dozen vehicles, foreign and domestic...

Been driving 35 years. have driven everything from hi-tech racecars and sportscars to 20 ton vehicles, network TV trucks, state trooper cars and been professionally licensed to drive them all.

I personally own 2 Corvettes, including a rare, 'built' ZR-1 + a 2005 Ford 250 Super Duty diesel.

Recently I bought a 90% reconditioned 1999 FDNY Battalion Chief's Suburban.

That's right... The mythical 1999 GMC Turbo DIESEL Sub. ('99 was the final year as well as the year that GM finally got ALL the 6.5's diesel bugs (cooling, etc.) ironed out.

For starters... so called 'HEAVY DUTY' is nothing compared to this beast. And while it sips gas doing the 'police type troll' in OD, while crusing on the highway, it's still 20 mpg with a HUGE gas tank. (60 gal?).

This thing is awesome!

Had it up on unreal rocky roads in the mountain passes of New Mexico the day after it arrived, no fear... TIGHT.

Well today, I finally decided to floor it while getting on the interstate...

WHHHHAAAAAOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Not a Corvette... but not a slouch either.

This thing must have 4.10 gears... cause I actually left a half dozen NEW cars behind on the highway and looking in my mirror I left them going uphill in the thin air at 7000 feet.

So, I settled down at 80 mph and cracked a smile from ear to ear...

ROTFLMAO!

Actually almost more fun than my Vettes.

Total Sleeper. Fact is... nothing beats a TURBO DIESEL for raw torque, baby.

The 1999 GMC Turbo Diesel Suburban... last of GMC's 6.5 Diesel beasts.

Once you experience it... you won't leave home w/o it.
