Givenchy; Play Intense Givenchy 100 ml EDT Spray for Men
I have been hunting for a decent men's floral fragrance to provide some change from woodsy comfort zone. My favorite fragrances include Versace Pour Homme, YSL L'Homme and Gucci II Pour Homme. I have tried a few different florals that I thought I might like, but none of them seem to really stick. I like Bulgari Blu on paper, but not on my skin. Wings is okay, but a bit cloying. I also found that I liked Givenchy Play Intense on paper, but wasn't thrilled with it when I skin tested it. However, it was one of the better florals that I have skin tested.
Givenchy Play Intense does floral boldly. The 2008 fragrance is a fairly new addition to the Givenchy line and plays on some of the original notes. The fragrance opens with top notes that I am familiar with. I love the clean citrus of Bergamot, which YSL does effectively with their L'Homme and L'Homme Nuit. The bergamot is complimented with tangerine. The citrus burst balances the floral quality of the notes. I do not generally like peppery fragrances, so the pink pepper must provide a soft strength to this fragrance.
The heart of Givenchy Play Intense consists of coffee flower, amyris wood and labdanum. Coffee flower has a jasmine quality, which gives the floral a soft, powdery quality. The powder is a prominent aspect of the fragrance, staying with it throughout the day. I don't get any evergreen from this fragrance, so I imagine the amyris wood may be the essence from its fragrant flowers. The labdanum adds a sweet earthy quality to the middle notes.
Givenchy Play Intense has a foundation of vetiver, tonka and patchouli. All of these notes have great staying power and are commonly found in men's fragrances. I am a huge fan of vetiver-based fragrances, especially when they are woodsy. The vetiver gets lost in the patchouli, which I probably smell more prominently because I don't like it. It is a pungent smell that reminds me of sweat. Tonka is another note that I really enjoy, providing a sweet vanilla quality. The combination of sweet notes and powdery flower stays with this fragrance through the day. However, the patchouli doesn't fit for me.
Givenchy Play Intense can be found for around fifty dollars for the 3.3 ounce bottle. I skin tested mine at Ulta, which sells the large bottle for $57. This floral inspired fragrance can be found at most perfume shops and online stores. It may be harder to locate in the big box stores.
My search for the perfect men's floral continues. Givenchy Play Intense was close. If not for the patchouli, this might have been the latest addition to my collection. There were qualities I liked about this fragrance. It is bold, with strong character, but with a nice powdery quality to balance it out. I think a lot of people will wear this without even picking up on the patchouli. Maybe it's my skin. Maybe I just don't like patchouli. Whatever the case, the patchouli wins out. I will continue looking for the right floral. I am going to rate this fragrance high, anyway, because it had a lot of great characteristics shy of the one note I don't care for. Four stars.
Givenchy Play Intense - Powerful Floral For Men

Pros: Floral, yet bold and strong. Powdery aspect calms the bold qualities.
Cons: The patchouli taunts me.
The Bottom Line:
Givenchy Play Intense almost became my newest fragrance. I have been searching for a men's floral, and this one has some great qualities. However, the patchouli drove me away.
