Metros carried a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine that developed a modest 55 horsepower. Base models first came only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 3-speed automatic was available on the upscale LSi. For 1990, the economy-leading model got an XFi designation. The XFi was the only model not available as a 4-door, and could not be equipped with an automatic transmission. Its engine developed less power. Also, A 2-seat convertible with a driver-side airbag and manual folding top appeared.

The White Bug @ 214k Miles

Pros: Gas Mileage, Economy
Cons: Parts prices, noise level.
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this car for anyone that wants to save a lot of money while driving.
Having used by Metro for several years commuting to work through rain, snow, floods, ice, and even occasionally some good weather, I must say I trust it more than my 2000 GMC 4wd to get me there and back.
Ride comfort is great for a young guy like me, I'm sure when I got older I would appreciate some softer seats.
I always gets more than 45 mpg, all the way up to 58. Yes, fifty eight confirmed miles per gallon of 87 octane gasoline. I do not believe there is any other 'regular' car (short of hybreds) that can get this kind of mileage. With high gas prices I can drive round trip for 2 hours on $5 of gas.
The power is definitely lacking, but it can always go the speed limit up and down hills.
Drivetrain reliability has been outstanding. So far, (I believe I purchased the car when it had around 130k miles) I have had to replace the CVC joints, the tires and the windshield wipers. Unfortunately the exhaust has rusted out in several places so the car is quite noisy inside. The door handle has also busted on the drivers outside, so I either have to open it from the riders side, leave the window partway open, or leave the door cracked.
I have carried 30 masonry blocks in the backend, I've carried 4-5 sacks of Cement (at 96lbs a sack) in the back, overall I've carried way above the recommended amount of weight. Suspension is still fine.
The downside is the price of replacement parts. I recently price checked on an Alternator, it was $129. Fortunately I was able to fix mine.
Overall this is the car if you want to save money on Gas. It has neve left me stranded except when the oil plug was not tightened enough and fell out.
