Metros carried a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine that developed a modest 55 horsepower. Base models first came only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 3-speed automatic was available on the upscale LSi. For 1990, the economy-leading model got an XFi designation. The XFi was the only model not available as a 4-door, and could not be equipped with an automatic transmission. Its engine developed less power. Also, A 2-seat convertible with a driver-side airbag and manual folding top appeared.

Love my metro!

Pros: Great mileage. Great on gas. Very compact, but convenient. Awesome car for anyone.
Cons: The jokes you get from friends for having a Geo Metro. Other than that, nothing!
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this to everyone that doesn't need a fancy car to look good. Surely, my favorite car for life!
Intro:
I was a little sketch about buying this car at first because of all the comments I've heard in the past, but I needed a car badly and it was only 200$CAN. How can you turn down a deal like that? (It's almost less expensive than my cell phone bill) So I bought it as my first car and I don't think I'll ever love another car more than this one!
Problems:
I had this problem that the anti-freeze would leak out like a stream, which would cause the car to overheat easily. I bought a brand new radiator to fix this, but it still leaked! I found out that it was the pipe that one of the rubber hose that ran from the radiator was rusted at the tip and because of that, it would always leak. I just put a couple straps on the rubber hose to seal it tight and it did just the thing. I wasn't mad that I bought a brand new radiator because it needed a new one anyway. If you don't want to spend all your money to fix this problem, I noticed that if you just turn on the heat, the car would run fine except it's like Cancun summer heat all the time in the car.
There was a couple rust spots near the bottom of the doors and along the windshield on the hood of the car, but nothing major. I fixed this easily by sanding the rust off and applying some fiberglass where it was needed. Look into this because it's an easy way to get rid of rust and it looks good as new. The only time you notice a difference is if you run your hand over the spot you fixed.
Another thing was that the rear left door doesn't open from the outside and I would need to take the whole door panel off to fix that. I don't find it's that big of a problem to go through that trouble.
The inside door handle for the passenger seat was broken off (I think fault of the previous owner); I got a replacement for it for a small cost and now is perfect with no problems.
One common problem with the car is with the auto car starter. With mine, it would blow the light fuses. What I did was ripped off the box for it, turned off the switch for it, and threw out the key chain starter. I suggest you do the same if you have this problem.
Stuff I love about the car:
I really didn't care what my car looked like when I got this one. Okay, I know it's a small dinky car, but once you own it, you see it in such a different way. Now, it's not small and dinky, it's compact and convenient for anybody. I wouldn't suggest it if you have a family and plan to drive them everywhere. I drive around one or two of my friends and it fits them perfectly.
There's a lot more room inside the car than you think. I have my driver seat pushed back almost all the way and the person sitting behind me still has room to move around his legs.
The seats are very comfortable. They are small and wrap around me like a baseball in a glove. I've even had comments on how comfortable the seats are.
My dash is awesome! There's a lip to it, so I can throw money or my cellphone on it and they will never fall off.
I always mention the fact that it only costs me 25$ to fill up and it amazes people everytime. I drive regularly and a full tank can last me about a week. Also, I've tested out that I can drive for over 400km on a full tank.
Inconveniencies:
Since the car is small, there's very little room in between the two front seats. There isn't a center console, but you have a couple basic things built in. Such as the drink holder, which is at the bottom under the radio. I drove the car for 3 months and didn't even know I had it because you have to pull it out. But their built so that they can only hold pop cans. I often have a Tim Hortons Iced Capp in it but since they're so big at the top, you can't fit another drink in the second holder. You also have a small change cup behind the E brake.
Another thing is that the car has no power steering, but it's not necessary since it's a small car and doesn't need heavy duty steering to turn a car of that size.
Conclu:
All in all, this is a great car for someone that doesn't need the high-performance, racing type car. If you don't care about jokes you get from friends having the smallest car they'd ever seen, this is a perfect car. I recommend it to everyone that needs a car to get you from point A to point B. Once this car completely dies (which I don't think will happen for a VERY long time, maybe 10 years or so) or I get into an accident, I will definitely get another Metro. Although, I will splurge a bit more into getting one of the convertible models, which I find are amazing. The car that I love as a convertible, it's a dream come true. Well, maybe a Ferrari or Porsche is a dream come true, but on a student's income, the convertible Metro will do just fine!
