Metros carried a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine that developed a modest 55 horsepower. Base models first came only with a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 3-speed automatic was available on the upscale LSi. For 1990, the economy-leading model got an XFi designation. The XFi was the only model not available as a 4-door, and could not be equipped with an automatic transmission. Its engine developed less power. Also, A 2-seat convertible with a driver-side airbag and manual folding top appeared.

Good Little Car

Pros: Dependable little car
Cons: Discontinued after 2000
For those of you looking for a small car that is easy to drive and need little to keep maintained, this could be the car for you. I've driven three different Metros, a 1990, 1992 and 1994, the 1990 was and automatic 2-dr hatch, the 1992 was a manual 4-dr hatch, and the one I currently drive is a 1994 manual 2-dr hatch. Of the three I liked the 4-dr the best. I never had to take one of them to the shop other than for state inspection, tire rotation, and oil change. My dad works for GM and the reason we've had so many Metros is because when looking for a family car he went to the different dealerships in our area looking for the most economic, most dependable car in the GM realm of cars, and the best combination based on the different service departments was the Geo Metro, and this opinion was based on information dating back to the Chevy Sprint up to our first Metro bought in 1990. Since that time the only problem we've had with the car is teenage drivers. They can put more cars on the disabled list than anyone else the 1990 was plowed into a Buick. It totaled the Buick and left my brother with a hair-line fracture is his hand and his girlfriend with a broken nose. This was before passenger-side airbags. The 1992 was turned upside-down in a ditch by yours truly, but I escaped without cuts or bruises. The 94 which I currently drive has been hit by a mule deer and pounded by soft-ball size TX hail, but I still drive it to and from work in Southern California. It is a very reliable car, and yes regretfully the 2000 model year is the last year says my dad who has worked for GM for 22 years. So long my dependable friend the Chevy Sprint/GEO Metro/Chevy Metro.
