The GPS 76 is designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This unit features a built-in quad helix antenna for superior reception and can provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections.The GPS 76 provides 1 megabyte of internal user memory to be used for storing downloaded Points of Interest data. This 1 megabyte of storage area is preloaded from the factory with worldwide cities (populations greater than 200,000) and nautical navigation aids such as lights, buoys, sound signals and day beacons, and is perfect for downloading points of interest detail from GARMIN's line of MapSource CD-ROMs. The GPS 76 is also preloaded with tide data for the United States.

Pros: Large, high resolution screen. Great functionality. Great satellite reception.
Cons: No built-in trip routing functionality.
The Bottom Line:
This is a great GPS unit with a lot of bang for the buck. At about the size of a large scientific calculator, it is portable and full of functions.
To quote Gollum and Frodo in the review title, this GPSMap 76S is my favorite toy. I like it because it is slightly larger than most handhelds, and therefore the screen is easier to read and follow. I have used it for about a month now and use it for hiking and Geocaching mostly. It shines in both these areas.
Trip routing will work if connected to a laptop that has GPS supported map software, such as MapSource. Built-in helix antenna provides great reception even in tree-cover. Reception is even better when used with plug-in external antenna. 24mb built-in memory allows me to upload topos for half the state of California seamlessly.
