How to change the interior bulb on JVM1490
| Author's Rating: |

Pros: Clean lines and design. Microwave/convection/exhaust fan functions in one space. Beverage feature works well.
Cons: Concerns about bulb burn-out rate. You can only dial cook times in 15-second increments.
The Bottom Line:
I specified this unit for my new home and would do so again.
I read in several forums how the whole unit needed to be removed to change the interior light bulb, and this is the GE Hotline advice as well. After taking a look at the assembly drawing, I figured out what to do. First (after you unplug the unit) remove the two screws holding the top grill in place, and then un-tab the grill from the unit. Next you need to un-do two screws and remove a small black plastic grill behind the exterior grill -- to get to the screw on the left you need to bend the grill forward a little bit. This exposes a 2"x3" metal plate on top of the oven cabinet - mine was held in place by one screw. This screw is not secured too tightly and you may be able to unscrew it by hand using a phillips screwdriver bit (just the bit). Otherwise, because of the tight clearance you will need either an angle screwdriver or a socket driver with a phillips bit to un-do this screw and remove the plate. Finally, after you remove the plate, you come to the lampholder, which is a small metal plate with two bends in it... move the plate to the right to disengage it from a tab, and then you can remove the lampholder and replace the bulb (20W 120V halogen). Hope this helps!
I've had the oven a little over a year, and both the interior and the exterior bulb burned out after a few months. Other than that, the unit has worked fine. If I were GE (or any other manufacturer) I would add a feature to microwave ovens that returned the turntable to its original position when you open the door -- I find that my coffee cup always winds up in the back of the unit. Maybe this idea could be patented. Remember, you saw it here first, possibly.
This is the first microwave I've had without a number keypad, and the jury is still out whether this is better or worse. You can only dial in cook times in 15-second increments. 15 secs is too much to take the chill off a bagel or slice of bread. I would have preferred 10-sec increments for the first 90 secs.
