Great PDF scanner
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: It is a great scanner.
Cons: See detail below. I was up and running in an hour despite of installation problems.
The Bottom Line:
Once installed, the scanner works great. The scanner also comes with a SCSI adapter and SCSI cable. The price includes shipping charges from Miami.
I got the Fujitsu scanner yesterday and have scanned hundreds of pages since then with no major problems. You can download a data sheet and the user's manual at http://www.fcpa.fujitsu.com/products/scanners/fi-4120c/
Cons:
1. Unlike most other USB devices, Fujitsu requires users to hook up the scanner before loading the driver (so that a "mini driver" will be detected and loaded from the CD provided).
2. The CD provided has Fujitsu's twain driver version 9.8.37. It did not recognize my Adobe Acrobat version 6 (standard). So I was not able to scan with Acrobat version 6 until I've downloaded and installed the latest driver, version 9.11.32 from the Fujitsu web site. Once I've done that, the scanner works great.
3. The older version of the driver defaults to A4 paper size and millimeters. The new version downloaded from the Fujitsu's USA web page defaults to letter size and inches.
4. Even though the user's manual is rather thick, it is almost useless as the explanations are very superficial.
5. Installation requires some basic computer / Windows knowledge.
6. A bit pricey, but it's worth it.
Pros:
1. The scanner works great. The driver is very flexible. I can scan mixed length papers with no problem, as long as I set the length to legal size (14").
2. The driver also allows you to skip either red, green or blue color when scanning b&w files. this is handy when scanning color paper. The default "skipped" color is green.
3. The ADF works great, smooth & fast. I can scan about 14 pages of income tax returns, using 300 dpi, per minute.
4. I can put a stack of papers on the ADF and only have to click on the "scan" button once, the entire stack will scan one page at a time all by itself. After scanning the whole stack, I can add more pages to the same file or press "done" to send the scan to Acrobat.
5. Very few misfeeds.
