Enhanced comfort, more power and new safety features are the headlines for the 2006 Ford Explorer. Drive this latest Explorer against an earlier version and you'll likely notice that it's quieter and more refined. Ford added additional sound insulation to reduce road noise and revised the Explorer's suspension and frame for improved ride quality. There are other mechanical changes, as well, such as upgraded brakes (now with EBD and brake assist) and a steering rack that reduces the effort required to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. A pleasant ride

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Safe, powerful, and reliable

Cons: 3'rd row seat is cramped.

The Bottom Line:
This has been a pleasant change from Ford's past vehicles. It is safe, decent MPG, and dependable.

Author's Review
I purchased this vehicle, a 2006 Ford Explorer XLT and have loved it ever since. It came with the leather seats and power driver side seat, running boards, and 17" wheels. It has the 4.0 Liter V6 and 5 speed automatic which is very smooth shifting. The door handles are a bit akward but are easily adapted to after a few times of using them. It rides very smooth and quiet on the highway and I have average 19 MPG highway and 17 MPG city which is good for this sized SUV.
It now also comes with standard Advactrac Stability Control and Traction Control + Roll Stability Control and Anti-Lock brakes. The Roll stability control has helped me prevent a wreck at least 2 times already with crazy traffic around here, once a compact sedan pulled directly out in front of me and I swerved and I could feel the brake pedal move and RSC came on to keep me on all 4 wheels, and another time when a car came over to my lane on the interstate and forced me halfway off the road into the grass and I overcorrected and it prevented the back end of my car from spinning out and potentialy a rollover. Ford has really improved safety with their purchase of Volvo, the Explorer has 5 star all around crash test rating and the Govt' roll over test has rated no-tip with the addition of RSC.

It glides over bumps and you feel like you are riding on air. I recommend this vehicle to anybody who wants a safe, reliable, and comfortable car. The 3'rd row seat however is really made for kids or short trips when adults are riding in it, it has minimal leg room and sits low to the floor.
