The Bottom Line:
A great car at a great price. After owning this Explorer, I'll never make fun of Ford products again.
We purchased our Ford Explorer used. It's an Eddie Bauer edition and it served us well for quite a few years. Alas, I'm faced with trading it in since our family has outgrown the vehicle. If it seated more than five at a time, I'd be keeping it.
When we bought the Explorer, we bought it on eBay, of all places, and we got a steal. I thought something HAD to be wrong with it for the price we got it for, but it looked and drove like new and passed a mechanic's inspection with flying colors.
Over the past three years, the only expenses we've had associated with the Explorer were routine maintenance (3,000 mile oil changes, coolant flushes, etc.) That being said, we did have a bit of a surprise in the winter. We live in Wisconsin, and winters get COLD here. On one particularly cold morning, the car would not start. It wasn't the battery. I had it towed to the dealership and it turns out that it had to do with the gas. Our driveway is on an incline and the gas line froze and gas couldn't get to the engine. So I did pay for a tow, but the car didn't cost anything to repair because there was no repair involved - it just had to "defrost". If you live in cold climates, keep your car on level ground.
Other than that, we have never had any issues at all with the Explorer and I love it. It looks great, rides great and the Eddie Bauer edition has just enough luxury to serve the spoiled side of me.
The only thing I really don't like about the Explorer is the gas mileage, but that's what happens when you want a larger vehicle and 4 wheel drive.
