Pros: Good mileage, reliable, fun, hardy, versatile
Cons: Could have a more powerful engine

The Bottom Line:
This is the ultimate versatile small SUV w/ actually functional 4x4 and road performance.
I bought my '98 2-dr in 2000 and have had it for five years now. This little SUV is roomy, versatile, reliable, and FUN! I've driven it on- and off-road, in rain, snow, ice, mud, and anything else you can think of. Never had any engine problems besides normal wear and tear. The only thing I've had to replace are things like spark plugs/wires, battery, and tires. And I put in an aftermarket stereo (Ford stereos are terrible, mine died shortly after I purchased it). I would recommend this SUV to anyone.
DRIVING: Responsive, nimble, and corners well. I never feel in danger of slipping or flipping (I have Michelin All-Terrain tires on factory alloy rims). Handles off-road equally well with short wheelbase and good clearance. It pulls trailers within its weight limit easily (I have the 6-cyl SOHV base engine) using a bumper hitch.
Sits four adults easily, with plenty of cargo space too. I would only give it a B on acceleration (I have the 5-speed manual transmission), but it gets the job done. I've been happy with this truck since the day I got it. It's got 109.000 miles on it now and still is going strong. Anyone who picks on Fords obviously doesn't know what they are talking about if they have never met this one. I did have a '94 Explorer previously, which was not that great, much less reliability, but Ford obviously worked out the kinks in the intervening years and came up with this GREAT result.
MILEAGE: Average -- 17.8 mpg; Highway -- 22 mpg;
City -- 15-17 mpg
