Escort Solo S2 - a solid, dependable detector

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Excellent range and good sensitivity. Attractive appearance and display. Easy to mount anywhere

Cons: Less range than the Escort 8500.

The Bottom Line:
A solid, dependable detector. Highly recommended

Author's Review
I recently purchased this detector after extensively researching it's abilities and weaknesses. Here's my opinion:
- I already own an Escort 8500, so I have an excellent detector benchmark to compare it to. I purchased the S2 because I was reluctant to run a hard-wire up the A-pillar in my Audi so I could discretely mount a detector above the rearview mirror (due to the side curtain airbags).
- Rangewise, The S2's has a little less than the 8500. On a recent 700 mile trip to Atlanta, the S2 would pick up K-band construction site speed boxes at a distance of 1.3 - 1.5 miles (over small rises and around corners). The 8500 would pick up the same boxes about 2 miles out (on a previous trip). On Ka, the S2 picked up HP cars about 1.5 miles away on straightaways. The 8500 was good for at least 1.75 miles. On laser, they are about equal...giving you ample time to slow down and accept your speeding ticket.
- On selectivity, the S2 seems to false less than the 8500...this is both a good and bad thing. When the S2 hits, more than likely it's not a false alarm. But, it does not hit on the same supermarket door openers the 8500 used to...sometimes you wonder if the S2 is actually working.
- Overall, I was impressed with it's abilities, especially given the fact the S2 is cordless. I actually prefer the S2's LCD readout, the warning chimes, and appearance when compared to the 8500. Contrary to other opinion's I have read, the S2 does not eat batteries. One set is good for at least a month of daily driving as long as you remember to shut it down when you park your car.
- Bottom line: If you are a hardcore speeder, buy an 8500 for it's superior range. Otherwise, the S2 is an excellent detector.
