?No more false alarms?. This is the claim of the Escort Passport 9500ix. The Escort 9500ix is an innovative design from Escort that combines GPS technology with a high performance radar detector to eliminate false alerts. In addition to a built-in database of North American red light and speed camera locations, users are able to program warnings for fixed red lights, speed cameras and speed traps. The 9500ix comes with other great abilities including the AutoLearn feature, which allows the detector to automatically block false alert locations in your area.

Escort 9500IX
Introduction
Radar detectors are one of those things that you love or hate. You love them when they alert you to a police officer with his radar on but you hate them when they constantly alert you to every automatic door, alarm system, and who knows what else in a 5 mile radius. They also possess one of the broadest price ranges for any consumer electronic equipment. In the world of portable radar detectors you can find a price range of $50-$500+.
The Escort 9500ix addresses many of the downfalls that radar detectors have suffered from for the past 30 years, and that is false alarms.
The Basics
The 9500ix by itself does not look that much different than many other radar detectors. It's a streamlined case with buttons on the top and an LED display. It offers full spectrum detection of X, K, Ku, KA, and Laser just like that $50 radar detector but it offers something that very few other radar detectors offer, a GPS and a magical database that is updated by subscription and something called AutoLearn.
GPS and AutoLearn Explained
GPS (Global Positioning System) is used to find your location and in the case of the 9500ix your speed. These two factors help to create a radar detector that has significantly less false alarms than any other detector on the market. The algorithm that Escort uses for the 9500ix is complicated but extremely effective. Basically over the course of your first few daily drives your 9500ix will behave like most other radar detectors, beeping at every CVS or Walgreens that you drive past, but on subsequent passes something magical happens...the 9500ix will say "STORED". This magical word means that the source of your false alarm will no longer be a source of your frustration. The AutoLearn system is constantly running and storing false alarms and it will also unlearn a false alarm if it is no longer in the area on repeated passes. This helps to prevent a true radar threat from being stored.
GPS and Speed - Auto Mute
The 9500ix utilizes the GPS system to calculate your speed. This allows for an intelligent mute based on your vehicles speed. For example, if you are driving 5 mph in a parking lot the 9500ix may beep once to alert you to a K band threat but it will then be silent since you are moving at such a slow speed. This helps to reduce constant beeps when sitting in a parking lot.
GPS and the Database
The 9500ix utilizes a database of red light cameras and speed cameras. The 9500ix comes preloaded with the database, but if you live in an area with red light cameras and speed cameras it would be advisable to pay the subscription fee to receive weekly updates to these locations. This cost, although minimal, helps to ensure up-to-date locations.
Real World Use
Hands down, the 9500ix is the best portable radar detector on the market. Once it learns the false alarms in your area, it is extremely quiet, to the point that you begin to question that it is working. This sense of quiet also means that any alert that you hear means that you should take action.
As for sensitivity it offers great range for all radar bands. Unfortunately, the laser performance is like every other detector, which means by the time you get a laser alert the Police already have your speed and you will be in trouble if speeding. If you want laser protection you should invest in a laser shifter.
Why use a radar detector?
Even if you never intentionally speed, mistakes happen. Speed limits change from 55 to 35 in many rural areas. This helps prevent your inattentiveness and the resulting ticket. While the 9500ix may cost $500, only 3 or 4 saved tickets and you have paid for this useful tool.
