Decent scanner at a nice price

Author's Rating: Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Nice functionality for what I paid

Cons: having a printer and scanner takes up a lot of room

The Bottom Line:
It's ok as a basic stand alone scanner.

Author's Review
My previous scanner had worn itself out, with quotes for fixing it well over $100.

My scanner doesn’t get a lot of use, particularly with an ability to print to .PDF, but It’s still helpful for scanning and emailing signed documents and scanning various musical items and collectibles that I sell on Ebay.

At the time, September 2006, I had a printer, the Canon IP 4200, which was meeting my needs fairly well. So, I did not consider an all in one printer at the time.

I decided to replace the scanner. Specifically, what I was looking for was fairly fast and accurate scanning, with easy to use twain and picture capture software. I was also interested in a modest price, based on my infrequent needs.

I saw this scanner at the Epson clearance store, refurbished, for $99, with full accessories and drivers. I was impressed with the following features:

4800 x 9600 DPI resolution, certainly high enough for me
Ability to scan paper, transparencies, slides
Fairly small footprint for a scanner, 11” x 19”
High speed USB2 interface

In use, it has worked relatively well. It is faster than what I had, although I do not have specs on either unit. The resolution on the scans is very nice, often rendering scans that are larger than what I want. It has worked well not only on flat documents but on musical accessories such as mouthpieces, ligatures and clarinet barrels.

The twain software is easier to use than what I replaced it with. The drivers to operate this unit continue to remain available.

I have not used the holders for films and transparencies.

I’m glad I bought this, but I’m not sure I’d do it again. Collectively, my current printer, the Canon Pixma 4300 and this scanner take up too much room on my desktop. It would be nice, if I could get an all in one that would have good color printing quality but not cost an arm and a leg or have proprietary ink cartridges that cost an arm and a leg.

If either of these units dies, I may consider an all in one. I’d really like to use the room freed up by using one of the new digitizing units to save all my old LPs electronically.

So, this is ok for a straight, basic scanner and well worth the current price used on Ebay at well under $50.
