THE ENGLISH PATIENT is an epic, sweeping adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's richly layered, WWII-era novel chronicling two periods in the life of European explorer Count Laszlo Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), whose torrid affair with a colleague's wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) is countered by the beginning of the war, allegations of Nazi sympathies, and disfiguring injuries. The patient's stay at the ruins of an Italian monastery under the care of an emotionally injured French-Canadian nurse (Juliette Binoche, who won an Oscar for the role) serves as a framing device for his intriguing story. Academy Award winner Anthony Minghella directs this film that is at once incredibly modern and a well-crafted throwback to classic Hollywood epics of yesteryear.

The English Patient: Hype and Hyperbole
| Author's Rating: |
|
Pros: Delicious scenery, actors, heartfelt emotions.
Cons: Twisting, convoluted plot and slow pace make most want to scream "Get on with it!"
Bottom Line:
Lovely drama with plenty of pre-WWII style. Great music, and above average acting is a perfect balm for the lackluster 2001 summer movie season.

Pros: Powerfully romantic script; strong themes; magnificent performances; exotic locales, costumes, and art design; good soundtrack
Cons: Grotesque thumb-severing scene
Bottom Line:
An adaptation of a seemingly unfilmable popular contemporary novel into a powerful movie about love and loss in exotic North African locales.

Pros: The visual design is miraculously impressive.
Cons: The romantic interludes may turn odd the most snooty of art house patrons.
Bottom Line:
Anthony Minghella's The English Patient is as impressive an achievement as can come from a Lawrence of Arabia inspiration.
