Pro results from enthusiast photographers, very cool.
I had similar film camera (EOS 3000), much of the functions are the same on the 20D such as the Basic Modes: Portrait, Landscape, etc... This camera also includes the program modes (aperture priority, etc...). Ok, nothing new so far, it's got the familiar Canon buttons and functions, this is good. The focus speed is incredibly fast and has 9 focus points compared to the 3 I had on the EOS film version. For those used to digital shutter delay when you press the shoot button, those days are gone, superfast. This awesome cam captures in RAW mode as well as Large/Fine jpeg. Raw is relatively new and is fantastic for pre-processing. In other words, I can 'fix' a not so perfect shot before I put it into Photoshop. This 'fix' includes adjusting the color temp., sharpness, contrast... etc..,etc... Taking the RAW data and shaping it used to be the job of the camera, (albeit, with the settings you prescribed), now we are given the generous option of adjusting these after we take the shot. A forgiving camera, nice. I'm not perfect, not even close so Canon made me a camera that is versatile enough to take me to a level of photography I'd wished I could do myself, thanks.
The EF lenses I already own fit onto the 20D too! Does life get any better? The 18-55 lens that comes with the base kit is, well... base. It'll do the job fine but if you've bought decent lens before, you'll surely upgrade this one.
Add the extra bucks for a better lens if you can.
