The COBRA microTALK FRS 220 is the best choice for the outdoor enthusiasts. Water resistant construction allows the microTALK FRS 220 to go where others cannot. Plus you get desired features like maximum allowable power output, all 14 FRS channels, 38 CTCSS sub-channel tones, a backlit LCD screen, incoming call alert, Roger Beep "end of transmission", and a Key Lock to prevent accidental channel change and much more! Great radios

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Good placement of controls, key lock

Cons: Too easy to turn on or off

The Bottom Line:
In a nutshell, they are small, powerful, have good placement of controls, sub codes, and a key pad lock.

Cobra has another good radio with this model. They come only in a two-pack, of either eggplant or charcoal. They are water resistant, which means that there is a seal around the battery door. Never having used them in a rain storm, I don't know if it helps.

One of the features I like about this radio are the sub codes. Selecting a subcode allows you to find a quiet channel to talk.

The lock button prevents changes to the channel setting while you are talking. It also prevents you from turning the radio off. The volume setting can be changed when the lock is enabled.

The radios drop into a low power mode after 10 seconds. This helps to conserve battery power. The battery meter lets you know when your batteries are starting to die.

One of the things I've liked about Cobras over, say, Motorola, is that the Push to talk button is on the side of the radio. It's just so darned inconveniently placed on Motos. Placed just below the PTT is the call button. You don't get a choice of tones, however.

The range is quite good as radios go. Line of sight is definitely a plus with any of these radios. Sound quality is best when the volume control is around 5 or 6.

What's lacking on these? The only real gripe I have is that the power button can be turned on too easily when you are packing the radio. Cobra is addressing that issue with its newest radios, which have a rotating power/volume knob on top of the radio.
