Happy Pills

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Works well with no side effects (for me), inexpensive

Cons: Hard to find in stores.

The Bottom Line:
Even though Claritin works better for me, at $1 per pill I don't see a need for it. I just wish more stores carried the 4 hour tablets.

The first thing I want to say is that I can only tell you how this stuff affects me. And it affects me in a way that I really like. My allergies go away and I don't get a buzz or feel drowsy.

This has been my allergy pill of choice for about 10 years. I'm an adherent to the philosophy that you should always take the smallest effective dosage. Which is why I only ever buy the 4 hour tablets.

The really cool thing about Chlor-Trimeton is that the duration seems to depend on when I take the tablets. If I take one when I'm already massively afflicted by allergies then it can take up to an hour to get relief. And I may have to take two. If I take one when I first notice the allergies, and before they get bad it only takes about 20 minutes and only one is necessary. And best of all, during allergy season, if I take one right when I wake up in the morning then very often I don't get any allergies at all for the rest of the day. But if I wait, then I'm in trouble.

Some allergy meds that I've tried have side effects like drowsiness, or the feeling of being all dried out, or getting a buzz. But I've never noticed any side effects to Chlor-Trimeton. I always stay clear headed, both figuratively and literally.

One thing I've found is that the generic versions seem to not work for me at all. I can
double or triple the dosage with generics and my allergies just laugh at me. I don't know what the difference is. I notice that the generics have one extra inert ingredient. And I have to think that if the other ingredients were of sufficiently high quality then they wouldn't need the extra ingredient.

The only thing I don't like about Chlor-Trimeton is that ever since Claritin came out it's been really hard to find. It's been getting easier lately, though most stores which carry it only carry the 12 hour tablets, which I won't buy. Or they carry only generics, which as I already said don't work for me. I've found the 4 hour tablets in 100 count bottles, though only rarely.
