2004 Chevy Silverado SS

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Great power; good looks; AWD system; big V-8 rumble.

Cons: Doesn't like "chattering" road surfaces; pricey.

The Bottom Line:
In a specialty truck market the Chevy Silverado SS stands out. It has power, presence, and poise.

Having had good luck with my 2000 Silverado longbed, a real workhorse, I decided that a new Chevy truck was in order (the 2000 had 94,000 miles). When I saw and drove a bright new red Silverado SS at my dealer, I couldn't resist! The 6 liter V-8(lifted from the Caddy Escalade) makes 345 hp and 380 lb. ft. of torque. It will get your attention! The AWD keeps things under control, however. The amazing thing is that even with all that power the SS gets 18 mpg all around.

This is a comfortable truck and has all of the conveniences: extra cab; XM radio; great BOSE stereo; etc. It rides on 20 inch wheels and great low-profile Goodyear Eagle tires. I must admit that I baby this truck- rarely taking it out in bad weather; but it's nice to know that the "seamless" AWD is there if I need it.

The SS handles very well for a truck, taking most curves and corners in stride. It does not like "chattering" road surfaces such as where a hardpacked county road wasn't graded well.

The thing I probably enjoy most about the SS is the wonderful big V-8 rumble from the exhaust- not loud, just great!
