I purchased my 2002 Silverado 2500HD with the duramax engine and allison transmission new. I had just returned from a grueling 2500 mile round trip to race my car in Memphis. From Ct that was just too much to endure. So I decided to tow my car from now on.

Since I'm a paraplegic, I had special considerations to think about. Namely ride height. If I can't get into the seat from my chair, I can't drive it. Also, can I load my chair without assistance? Third, will hand controls work well with it?

After checking out the Ford SuperDuty (too high) and Dodge (no extended cab) I decided on the Chevy Silverado.

I have never regretted the decision.

In 2002 there weren't that many Duramax turbo diesels to be had. The engine was introduced in 2001 to rave reviews.

So I had very few dealers with models to inspect. I did find a dealer in Canton Ct with several on the lot. The one I fell for was just about perfect.

My rig is a fully loaded LS model. Only missing option was cab mounted running lights. I bought a set from the dealer and had them installed when my hand controls were put in.

My rig now has 50,000 miles on it. The duramax is amazing. Even in 5 below zero, it fires right up. Now it doesn't really 'heat up' in the cold but that's the nature of diesels anyway. Otherwise, the duramax and allison tranny are a perfect match.

While towing my camaro with a 21' closed deck trailer over the Appalachian mountains the truck just keep right on pulling. Its just the perfect towing rig for me.

Only problem I've experienced since I purchased it, the rear driveshaft u-joints prematurely failed in 2006. The front one was seized, while the rear was rusted. It caused a pretty decent squeak that got my attention. The dealer charged me just over 400 to fix and I was then refunded the amount from Chevrolet. =) So I'm a happy customer.

I have very little modifications made to my truck. They follow:
Hand controls
Bed spray lined matching red color
Stainless steel/rubber flapper style mud flaps
Hood deflector
Window vents
Tonneau cover
Stainless steel cold front
K&N air filter
Digital Brake controller
Sirius sat radio

My truck is a joy to drive. And since its a extended cab, I can carry some friends (up to 4 passengers) in complete comfort. And my suzuki atv fits very snuggly in the 6.5 bed.

My experience with mpg is rather consistent with other owners. On highway at 65 steady cruising I avg 17.5 mpg. In city I can fall to 14mpg.

With 50,000 miles, my tires are about at the end of their usefulness. But they are wearing very well for 5 year old tires.

I have no plans to part with my truck anytime soon. Besides, I'm a gear head and plan to add a chip and 5 inch exhaust system so I can beat silly corvettes who think I just drive a big hulking truck. ;)
