Chevrolet revived a famous old name when it issued a modern version of the Impala for 2000. The new front-drive midsize sedan was smaller in dimensions, sharing its basic understructure with the Buick Century and Regal, Oldsmobile Intrigue, and Pontiac Grand Prix. A 3.4-liter V6 engine was standard in the base model. The upscale LS sedan got a 3.8-liter V6, which was optional on the base Impala. Both had a four-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, power windows, and power door locks. A side-impact airbag for the driver was standard in the LS and optional in the base Impala. Also standard in the LS were antilock braking, a tire-inflation monitor, traction control, and a firm-ride suspension. Each of those extras also was included with the bigger-engine option for the base-model Impala. Leather upholstery was available for both models, including a split folding rear seatback.

2000 Chevrolet Impala
Author's Review
My Dodge Dynasty had 193k on the odometer. The wheezes, clunks, and droppings were heralding the end. I figured that I had best get looking.
Domestic and import--probably a dozen dealers in three days. Some interesting models--but none that grabbed me.
Then I saw the "Imp"! Impala-I thought they went extinct years ago. She was not at all what I started out to get. An introductory year model to boot- and I am leary of being a guinea pig. But those classic lines and the round tail lights seemed to beckon to me. She was brand-spanking new so I couldn't cut much of a deal. But I took her home--and kept her! Did I do right?
Well that was last July and her odometer now sports 17+k. She accelerates smoothly, holds the road well, and is a comfortable ride for even 5 large adults. [The dealer says 6-but that is pushing it]. She operates well on lower-priced 87 octane and is not considered a "high performance" car for insurance rating. On the Capital Beltway (Washington, DC), she is large enough to hold her own and nimble enough to avoid the 18-wheelers. [The model also did great in industry crash tests]. The sound system handles my "Faith Hill" and my daughter's alternative music equally well. The rear-view mirror with the electric eye is a real plus. No more night blindness. She has only needed 2 oil changes. The brakes seemed to chirp some at first but the dealer took my complaint seriously and fixed them right up--at no charge! Whoa, a responsive dealer!
The look and feel of a big sedan--without the "Grandpa image". Take a test drive and judge for yourself.

Pros: moderately priced, safe, curb appeal, responsive
Cons: the front undercarriage scoop bottoms on steep inclines
