Very Nice, But Beware

Author's Rating: Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Great product for the price.

Cons: NOT all wires, memory is included. Has a tempermental failsafe.

The Bottom Line:
I would probably still buy this product again, but with more information.

I love this camera. It has everything I wanted. It is very easy to use and to work. You have an "easy" mode and a "professional" mode. You can take pictures while filming, and you have many options for special effects while filming. The downloading from the Camera to the computer is very easy and intuitive.

However, I bought this one in part because I could use it as a WebCam, as was promoted on the Canon Website (see http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelFeaturesAct&fcategoryid=114&modelid=11004#f13). In order for this feature to work, I will need to spend another $100 or so. I need a firewire cable ($40-60) and a firewire port ($20-30) for my computer.

It's a great family camera, and worth the money I spent. Especially for sending video to Grandpa and Grandma.

Now that I have had this unit for almost a year, I thought that I would update this review. I still think that this is a great camera, but I have had one major problem.

Just before the holidays my camera started to reject any tape that I put into it. I researched it and found that it has a "failsafe" mechanism that won't allow a damage tape to be used. This same "failsafe" won't let a tape be used if there is some problem with the camera.

Perhaps this is a nice feature so that you don't ruin your valuable video, but it needs go back to the factory for repair (in either CA or NJ). Foretunately it still falls under the warranty (don't lose your receipt) so they will fix it for free but what happens in a year? We will see.
