Why go SLR when this will do as good, if not better!

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Perfect SuperZoom 8MP Camera that's great in everyway

Cons: Somewhat slow to refresh for next picture, or recharge, but nothing otherwise!

The Bottom Line:
Just an amazing unit that's easy enough for the "dummies", yet good enough for the pros! Amazing! Check it out if you want one solid camera!

Okay, the story goes like this... I am a huge researcher when it comes to making large purchases (and yes, I consider this a large purchase) and making sure I get a good deal and/or product! I research through many different outlets including here, ConsumerGuide and Consumer Reports (favorite). Anyways, after doing my research, oddly enough, it seems like just about everyone rated Canon cameras to be overall the best brand as far as entire product lines go! Therefore, I bought a Canon!

On that note, I went the day after Thanksgiving and bought this Canon SX100IS. It was on sale for $275 at Best Buy and seemed to have everything I wanted on it (High Megapixel, 10X Optical Zoom, SD Memory, Etc.). I went ahead and picked it up on a whim and ever since then, have been truly amazed! I have learned to basically always have it on me and that is one positive thing about the Canon SX100IS, is that it is portable enough (unlike most SLR's even though it gives you SLR like quality) to carry in your pocket and not be overly cumbersome and/or bulgy! So, yeah, that's definitely one reason why one should go with a "Point & Shoot" model such as this, is because it is much more portable and allows you to have it with you for the "real shots", not just poses! As mentioned before, I keep it with me always and it has come in handy, especially at the many concerts/shows I attend! This camera has a great ISO rate and allows you to take motion shots really well! Sure, sometimes (admittedly) I wish it were a bit faster, but surely gets some great motion shots and if it can't get a good motion shot, it does allow you to take video! Yeah, the video takes up much more memory on the SD Card, but SD Cards are extremely cheap, which is the reason why I wanted a camera that accepted SD and not xD or Memory Stick (I got close to buying a Sony, but obviously I didn't due largely to this fact).

I have taken an extreme amount of photos and videos with this camera after having it for only a few weeks and I am never unsatisfied (except on occasion with my own skill and stupidity, but we all know how that goes, or maybe it is just me... Hmm :-0).

I have not learned everything about this camera yet! Sure, I did a quick scan of the manual but, I am a man and if all else fails, than follow the instructions! Until then, I really doubt I will inquire with those, but it's fun! Oh yeah, one more positive is that this camera only takes 2 batteries! Sure, it would last a little longer if it took 4! But, my old camera, an old Olympus that's probably 3-4 years old (Top of the line for its time and it's only a 3.1 Megapixel with 3.2X Optical zoom... You can do that math!), took 4 AA batteries and didn't last near as long as this does, on only 2 batteries!

If I were to have a couple complaints about the Canon SX100IS, or only one, it would be the fact that it doesn't have a viewfinder! Sure, people enjoy the LCD more than the viewfinder. However, the LCD uses much more battery power than does the viewfinder on most cameras. But, it lasts for a long time! As a matter of fact, I took over 300 photos and 2 4 minute videos the other night on one set of AA batteries! It's great and if you're looking for a great, SLR-like, high quality camera, go with the Canon SX100IS; you won't be dissappointed!
