This camera makes taking photos of kids fun again!

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Easy to use, fast, long battery, great photo clarity

Cons: Memory delete doesn’t give more room for other photos.

The Bottom Line:
This is a great camera with lots of features. It’s easy enough for beginners to use and has enough features for the photo enthusiast.

I used to dread having to take photos of my two year old because he was always on the move and the shutter speed and delay to re-charge of my old camera (it’s two years old) took so long that I was always missing shots. I was always missing shots because it took a good 30-60 seconds between shots to take the next photo.

Thanks to the Canon G6 I no longer have that problem. I love this camera. Every photo is crisp and clear. The shutter speed is fast and there are no issues with the battery since it is rechargeable. The memory card that comes with it will only hold 15 or so photos (of a quality that you could enlarge) however I upgraded to a 256 mb card that holds about 290 photos. I’ve charged my battery when I first got my camera and have taken over 350 photos and STILL have full battery charge! I was always having to change out my batteries in my old camera even if I bought the expensive photo batteries; it was horrible. I figure the amount of money I save on batteries would have made up for the expensive cost of this camera (I did not buy this camera, it was given to me as a gift from my father after I almost refused to give him back his Canon G5)

There are a couple of other features that I love about this camera. First of all I like the size. I know there are a lot of small cameras out there, but as most moms and dads have found there’s a lot of baggage that goes along with kids. My last camera was very small, but not small enough to put in your pocket. I found that I was always gathering things up out of the car after a trip and the camera would be in my arm and fall out. Well as you know cameras don’t do very well after they’ve hit the ground a couple of times. This camera is bulky enough that when I take it out of the car I automatically use the shoulder strap and put it on my shoulder or neck and I don’t have to worry about losing it in a jacket and mistakenly dropping it. Also, since my son likes to look and take photos, the neck strap makes sure he doesn’t drop it. Also, large enough that if he gets his hands on it without me knowing I can see it from across the room and get it back before I gets his fingers on the lens or is able to push buttons. The other thing I love is that the LED screen is reversible. When I’m done with the camera I turn the screen around so that it faces the camera body which reduces fingerprints and dirt from the LED screen. It easily opens and turns on quickly so I am able to get shots while viewing them on the LED as I’m taking photos. I can either leave the screen open or I can turn it around and make it flush with body of the camera so that it doesn’t stick out off the body of the camera. Another thing that I like is that it lets me know how many photos I left on my memory card. My last camera had this, but I’ve found out that some of my friend’s cameras that cost over $200 don’t have this feature (or they don’t know how to activate it). This camera also has multiple focal points which helps give fabulous enlargements.

The only thing that I don’t like is that if you delete photos it does not make more room on your memory card. So if you go on a vacation and don’t have a lap top to download to or an extra memory card you’re out of luck. We won’t have that problem because we have a laptop (as long as we remember the link), but it is something to be aware of.

All and all the Canon G6 is a great camera. I know the biggest complaint that people have about this camera is the cost. Honestly I didn’t purchase this camera because of the cost. I was very happy to get it as a gift. I was afraid that if this camera only lasted two years, like the last, that it wouldn’t be worth the money, and yes I’m frugal; but after using this camera for a while and over the holidays, I would have to say that it’s worth every penny and I should have forked over the money months ago for it!
