Great Digicam for Those Who Want to Learn

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: First class pictures. Comprehensive features that allow user creativity. Articulated LCD. Price.

Cons: AiAF a bit slow. Software average.

The Bottom Line:
Buy this camera if you want to learn how use Av, Tv etc. You will not be disappointed with the quality of pictures.

Author's Review
After reading a number of reviews of digicams around the £200 mark, I decided on the A95 due to it's impressive range of manual options and the reputation Canon have for quality. (This despite the "E18" scare)I wanted a camera I would be able to learn the art of photography with, with a view to expanding to a dSLR in a couple of years time.

I have taken around 1500 shots in 3 months. Various types of pics: Close-ups, landscape, family shots. The quality of the print hasn't let down. Really sharp with excellent colours. This is the bottom line after all, isn't it?

The swivel LCD viewer is a real plus, enabling candid shots of people who can be captured naturally, rather than contorting their faces when they see a camera being pointed at them.

AiAF is the only real niggle. As has been said before, it has a tendency to "hunt", taking up valuable time in which the desired shot can be lost. Far better to set it to Flexizone or centre autofocus.
The video is a bit basic, but my rule of thumb has always been, "One machine, one job" If you want great video, buy a video cam. The A95 is designed to take pictures and it succeeds in that.

Some have commented on the life of the batteries. My experience is good - around 300/400 shots and uploads to PC and I have the LCD on all the time - with a single "charge?" (Energiser 2500 batteries)

If you're new to photography, or just want a camera you can point and shoot, this is the camera for you. It's really easy to use. BUT, if you want to expand you skills, the camera's feature set allows you to gradually grow into it.

We love this camera and I would wholeheartedly reccommend it (or it's successor, the A610, when it comes out)
