The Canon Optura 200MC is a digital video camcorder, using the standard MiniDV cassette. Delivering more than 500 lines of horizontal resolution, it produces high quality video. This camera records audio and video as digital data which can be transferred to and from a PC or a professional DV VCR through a 4-pin connector based on IEEE 1394 protocol. This DV terminal ensures high-quality transfer of the digital data with almost no deterioration in quality of pictures or audio. The Optura 200MC also handles two types of analog audio and video input/output using audio/video cables (composite) or S-video. Pros: Ideal travel DVcamera. Lightweight. Comfortable. Intuitive interface. Image stabiliser excellent.Good software bundle. Quality stills.
Cons: SD memory card too small. Could do with a wider lens.
The Bottom Line:
Highly recommended camera. Easy to use, and lots of (optional)manual settings for those who like to fiddle- like me. Small enough for convenient travel. Outstanding image quality,
Well, I finally lashed out and got me a digital video camera. After way too much research, I settled on the Canon MVX2i (Australian Model)(=Optura 200 in the U.S.)
It's a very easy to use camera. Didn't really need to refer to the instruction booklet to get all the basics going...but once I had read the book, the features and settings were very easy to navigate.
I was surprised by the picture quality from the stills camera. The metering for the camera is excellent.
The video quality is simply superb. Sharpness is very good. The 10x optical zoom is very sharp and clear. The image stabiliser does enhance the viewing a lot at higher magnifications. The different shooting modes are quite good and enhances the ability of the camera to get the metering right.
The supplied SD memory card of 8 MB is way too small. I bought a 128 MB card which was great. Had 2 weeks worth of holiday photos on it with lots of room to spare. (Standard quality, not fine quality chosen)
For me getting a compact sized camera was important, because if it's too big, I wouldn't be bothered carrying it around with me. So no footage to show for all that expensive camera. But it's pretty light, it's easy to use. In my opinion the upright style of the camera means it's less intrusive in a group of people (it's not up at eye level...)
The software bundle has been glitch free. Makes it very easy to download stills and video.
All in all, a very high quality package. Highly recommended.
Standard battery isn't too bad, but if using the flip out screen power consumption goes up. So I bought the biggest battery available. Got several hours out of it. Use the original as a spare. Sound quality isn't quite as good as the image quality. But not too bad.
