The Canon GL1 is professional quality video equipment in a more compact, affordable camera. For the best possible picture quality, these cameras use three separate 270,000 pixel CCDs (one for each primary color). For great optical quality, the GL1 uses a fixed (non removable) 20x optical (100x digital) zoom L Series fluorite lens. Audio is recorded through the built in microphone which features two pairs of pickup elements. The electronics of the GL1 have many advanced features, including a number of programmed AE modes, as well as both shutter and aperture priority modes, spotlight mode and sand and snow mode which is designed to prevent dark, underexposed subjects in situations with bright backgrounds commonly found in sandy and snowy areas. The GL1 uses an IEEE 1394 port for digital editing and for transferring footage to and from other IEEE 1394 compliant devices making it easy to save and share your memories. Minimize

Who Needs the XL-1? The GL-1 is Here!

Author's Rating: Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: Equivalent to the XL-1 (its big brother), Incredible Optical Zoom, 3 CCD w/ PixelShift Technology

Cons: Non-Interchangeable Lens

The Bottom Line:
Overall better features than its big-brother (the XL-1). Equivalent video quality with better zoom capabilities.

I'm a huge fan of mini-dv camcorders - not the "consumer" ones - I'm a professional who needs great equiptment at phenomenal prices. I was considering purchase of the Canon XL-1, the world's priciest minidv camcorder. After all, it's loaded with the Interchangeable-Lens feature, as well as its 3-CCD + Pixel Shift technology. Most would think this beats out all camcorders priced below - including Sony's VX2000, the "must-have" camcorder for professional videographers such as myself.

Trust me folks, money wasn't the problem when I approached the check-out line. I saw advertised the Canon GL-1. This camcorder has much more than 3 times the zoom capability the XL-1 has. In addition, it's just small enough to be classified as a handheld, so you don't need to be working out in the gym all day to lug the XL-1 around on your shoulders. The GL-1 also obtains the unique feature (unavailable to big-brother XL-1) of a flip-out 2.5" LCD monitor. I've shot numerous events with this great machine: weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, music videos, etc. The sound is also equivalent to the XL-1. Both have the 16-Bit PCM Stereo CD-Quality digital audio mic. Trust me, I've spent more thought that Canon has between all of the inexpensive and expensive minidv camcorders, and Canon GL-1 wins all bets for all conditions and scenarios. If you must have the ability to interchange lens (for fisheye effects and such, which you can add computer filters for anyway) than go with the XL-1. If you're smart, you're the GL-1.
